It's hard to find this place. I drive down Pestalozzi looking for it and it doesn't jump out at me.
It's on the part of Pestalozzi most people don't associate with Pestalozzi, since a certain macrobrewery is the first thing most people think of when that street is mentioned. It's actually only about three blocks from Tower Grove Park.

It worked for Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
my sh*tty computer monitor is so dark, I can't even see it. anyway, i want to check this place out. where did the bar come from in Scottish arms? does shaved duck look similar?
Shaved Duck is much smaller than Scottish Arms and has more of a restaurant feel, though there is a designated bar area. I ate there the other day and thought it was great. Heavy emphasis on good beer and house made charcuterie (french term for preserved or processed meats; sausage, cured duck, duck confit, prosciutto, pate, etc). The menu was very nice and very interesting; nice ambiance, good professional service, mid to upper level price point--entree's are in the mid teens, lots of small appetizers etc under $10.00)

The wife and I had some friends in from out-of-town this weekend and we walked over and had Sunday brunch at The Shaved Duck. Wow, it was fantastic. Had myself a brisket sandwich consisting of slow-cooked brisket atop two scrambled eggs with white cheddar. The pancakes my wife had were really good and our friends thoroughly enjoyed their breakfasts as well.
Perhaps the best thing - the coffee was served in a french press and was absolutely fantastic! Apparently it's Kaldi's coffee and it was so smooth and rich. We all agreed it was some of the best coffee we've ever had.
We will be going back...soon.

Does anyone know if the Shaved Duck recently changed ownership or chefs? This place has some of the best baked beans in town, but the other night the recipe was totally different.

Per the website, they are still affiliated with Scottish Arms so apparently no change in ownership. When was the last time you went? They changed to a more bbq oriented place quite a while back.Mark Groth wrote:Does anyone know if the Shaved Duck recently changed ownership or chefs? That's a good sign. I was there a couple months back and was bragging and talking up the joint, then we went back last week and a few things had changed. It was late in the evening, maybe they were just out of the good stuff. Thanks for the info.
We had never been there ourselves, but a few weeks ago we took a chance and took some out-of-town guests there. It was fantastic. Great beer selection, especially.

Mark, what did you not like about your last visit?

First of all, I love this place, we take people here all the time to show off TGE/Fox Park/Compton Heights. There was excellent live music, a great Six Row Whale (wheat/ale)on tap and we ordered the usual (smoked chicken and baked beans). The beans were totally different and the meat wasn't as top shelf as usual. We chalked it up to an off night, and it was near closing when we went in. But I couldn't help but wonder if something had changed. We'll be back.lukethedrifter wrote:Mark, what did you not like about your last visit?
The Shaved Duck is still an Ally Nisbet restaurant. It is run by Kate Kobylarek and Lauren Pusczek who took over when it changed to an American Smoked Meat Menu. The menu has remained constant since the beginning. The Duck is very popular and maintains very high standards and can run low on items. Not sure about the beans. I'll ask the chefs.
