Saw a sign for a restaurant that will be opening next to the Loft Jazz Club. Said it would be healthy stir fry but I didn't catch the name because the banner was folded over in the wind.

Is there a thread for this or does anyone have any detailed info?

Speaking of the Loft Jazz Club, have you guys seen that place on the weekend? It is packed with people and there are always HIGH END cars parked out front (saw a Maybach last week).

That place is drawing some crazy crowds in there. Didn't the Deb Peterson column a few weeks ago have a bit about Janet Jackson and some other A listers having to circle the block and then leave before entering because the place was so busy?

I just happen to be driving down Olive one Saturday night and got stuck in the resulting traffic jam. I noticed a lot of off-duty cops there just to handle traffic. I also noticed the ton of high-end vehicles: a few high-end AMG level Mercedes and some other exotics you don't see often in St. Louis.

Nice to see the business. Hope it can stretch to other places in that neighborhood. The lack of residential conflicts would make it an ideal area for nightclubs.

Is that the jazz club that's not a jazz club?

That place is the newest hangout for St. Louis buppie/yuppie types. I rode by one night and it was packed. Cars lined Olive, Cardinal, Locust, Compton.

Also, there are a lot of national recording artists/entertainers who visit St. Louis regularly and fly under the radar of St. Louis press. And I am sure with St. Louis' burgeoning hip-hop music scene there are always some national hip-hoppers in the mix.

Back to the stir fry place...

It's called Santo Bento. This is their second location, the other being at 82nd and West Main in Belleville. The owner is the (former?) head chef at St. Clair Country Club who I used to work for. I think the food is quite good with large portions, but some people will think there's not enough grease. The concept is a la Crazy Bowls and Wraps, Nothing But Noodles, W.G. Grinders, etc. I think it will attract a good SLU crowd.

I was going to guess black yuppie, so I wasn't far off. How is it any different than a yuppie, though? Nothing in the yuppie definition relates to being white.

Everyone is guilty of that. From the wikipedia article on yuppies:
A Yumpie is a "young upwardly-mobile person". While this term is far less common, many confuse the derivation for Yuppie with that of Yumpie, and the two express broadly the same connotations anyway. Some sources (textbooks, even) state that yuppie actually stands for "young upwardly-mobile person".

Yippie is sometimes used to refer to a person with hippie values and attire but with yuppie consumer habits. However it is most often used to describe members of the Youth International Party, who have radically different views than the average yuppie.

A Yupster is a yuppie hipster, an upper-middle class professional who participates in the hipster cultural scene.

Buppie is a black urban professional.

Guppie is a gay yuppie.

Puppie is a poor urban professional.

Yupmo is a crossover between a yuppie and an emo.

Yuppify and yuppification are terms used in place of the words gentrify and gentrification but with similarly negative connotations.

A yuppie slum or yuppie ghetto refers to any neighborhood that is largely populated by a young well-off crowd, but often has other connotations of gentrification and rising rental and dining costs in a previously low-rent neighborhood.

An ORCHID is either member of a yuppie couple with a young child. The label is an acronym for One Recent Child, Hideously In Debt.

A yuppie food stamp is a crisp US$20 note issued by an ATM.

DINKs (also DINKY in the UK) are well-off couples who often have much in common with "yuppies". The label is an acronym for Dual Income, No Kids [Yet].

SITCOMs are former yuppies or DINKs. The label is an acronym for Single Income Two Children Oppressive Mortgage.

Yuppicide is the killing of Yuppies, and vehicular yuppicide is the act of wrecking a yuppie's BMW. A New York-based hardcore/punk band in the 1990s called themselves Yuppicide.

Yuppie Flu is a term formerly applied to Chronic fatigue syndrome, before that condition's general acceptance as a genuine medical problem.

Organic Yuppies is a term used in the UK for yuppies and middle class thirtysomethings obsessed with food and wine.

David Brooks characterized yuppies as bourgeois bohemians, or Bobos, in his book Bobos in Paradise. (Aka Trustifarians.)

A variation, yuffie, is a young-urban-failure, or more generally a failed yuppie.

Boughie (pronounced B??-zhee—an abbreviation of the word Bourgeois), is a derogatory term originated in African American Vernacular English, and used to describe an African-American of lower-class origins, who has elevated into "upper-crust", and has forgotten (or, has chosen to forget) about their true origins. Boughies tend to have fancy or refined tastes, style, and manner in the interest of appearing more cultured or sophisticated than their ordinary upbringing would suggest. The term is used prominently by many black stand-up comedians, in urban films like Boyz N the Hood (1991), and in television sitcoms such as The Jeffersons.

But getting this thread back on target...

I'm glad to see the stir-fry place. Hopefully they'll get some good business but I'm worried it might be in the wrong direction for SLU students. Most of the retail seems to be focused west of campus.

Could draw some lunch business from AG Edwards though.

Let's try and keep this thread on topic about the stir-fry place. The Jazz Club and labels can be discussed elsewhere.

Stop being so dramatic.

It's a stir fry restaurant. Threads warp sometimes, but they quickly find their way back on topic, we don't need herders to remind us what the topic is.

Since I was criticized in another thread for doing anything besides being a mod, I'll put an official get back to topic post in this thread. That is the only thing I should be posting according to some people...

(Yes, I know I'm exagerating a lot.)

If we start talking about how bad of a mod/admin you are, will that get another 'back on topic' post, or will that warp the thread even more?

Looks like they're now open. Drove by during lunch and they had signs saying "Now Open" and a fair amount of cars in front.

Anybody heard anything or stopped in the place?

Jive and I tried to grab dinner there last night (Monday), and we were VERY disappointed that the place closes at 6:00pm!

Now I have to say, that is the DUMBEST closing time in the world. Who's bright idea was that? 6:00pm? Why not stay open a couple hours later so downtown commuters can stop and pick up a cheap, quick dinner on the way home? Did they not think of this? Or how about SLU students who may want a casual alternative to Crazy Bowls & Wraps?

If they wish to be a lunch place, why stay open till 6:00? Close at 3:00!

So stupid.

Hey I'm the guy that picked 6PM to close.. yep it's dumb but until we get additional restaurants in the immidiate area we felt foot traffic would be at a minimum! THE FOOD IS GREAT so i suggest stopping in ASAP. Santo-Bento is offering a special to all University students ( don't care from which school.. you all need the $$$!) buy a meal and get a fountain drink for free! prices are starting at 6.00 and you get plenty of food.

Since I'm also an investor in the area I'll let you know a few deals in the works.. Roof top grill @ 3131 Olive ( Done deal ) should open this summer

and is located across from Santo Bento. Also a BBQ place and a pizza place are both in discussions. We expect the Coffee house to be getting their stuff going also in late spring as they are waiting for roasting equipment! .. We also have a deal signed for a Vegas restaurant/club operator who is finalizing plans for 3037 olive and if you don't like in a box you know Mississippi Nights is looking hard in our area...so whit that said,Santo Bento will be open after 6 very soon grasshopper....

Wow. Very nice. I am a huge fan of this area. Hopefully it help bridge the gap between DT and Midtown.
