The last couple times I have been by in the evening there are lights on and people working. Could be false hope as looking back over the thread it seemed almost ready months ago, but here's hoping. I am eager to see how this place affects that corner. It would be great if once it got into full swing it had pedestrian traffic similar to Kayak's. Even though Kayak's manages to have a Metro stop even closer and is on the front steps of Wash U, between the FP station and what seems to be a mobile demographic living between DB and Union (from what I have seen so far) I would think it could be comparable.

Drove by after work and saw that the window paper with the "coming soon" is down all around the perimeter. There were people inside at the counter and it looked like there were tables all set up. I didn't get a chance to look in. Maybe over the weekend.

Thinking back over my entire life, I can't come up with a single time I bought donuts after 8:00 am.

So it's probably not surprising that they are only open in the morning.

Not surprising, but the Donut Drive-In on Chippewa is open until something like 10 pm I believe Thurs-Sat.

They were doing some advertising over the weekend with free coffee and cookies and said they would be open in a couple of weeks.

No new info, but described the availability of bike repair, rental, and purchase along with cafe. Apparently antique bicycles are used as interior decor.

^ Is this area considered Skinky D or CWE?

Rumor Mill Output: Talayna's is closing. Confirm or Deny?

I can't wait to check out VeloCity! What kind of bikes are they renting? Cruisers?

Technically, it's DeBaliviere Place. If it were across the street, it would be Skinker-DeBaliviere.

Oooh, yay! I'll have to stop by Velocity before continuing home on the train. I love that we'll be able to rent bikes. We've thought about buying some used ones, since we live across from the park, but we're still not sure if we're too lazy. ;) This will give us motivation to try it out. Plus, food and doughnuts! :)

Too bad they couldn't have opened in time to take advantage of the warm weather, though. However, the foilage still is great, and the weather isn't feezing yet!

Thank God it's cooled off. Why would anyone want to ride a bicycle when it's 90 degrees out? Sweaty and gross and dehydrating. The cooler part of the year is the best time to exert oneself outdoors.

I went in there today and bought a juice. I forgot to ask if they have wireless internet, which I think is key for any business model that involves people buying coffee drinks. Which seems to be half of their thing.

The past month has been perfect for biking. I can't bike in Dogtown though, I'm not in good enough shape to cycle up all the hills.

:D Love the Velocity Cafe. An expansive view to the outside through a panorama of windows. Yes wireless internet.

despite those challenging hills Dogtown is about the best staging ground for a city bike ride of any neighborhood I can think of. So many options. Ride over Tamm into Forest Park and then into the CWE. Or take Macklind over to the Hill and Tower Grove--though you might have to wait for a 2mph train :)

Chris, can you take a picture of the outside sometime? I'd love to see how the place looks. It's been a long time coming.

Oh boy, where do I begin...

I sincerely want this place to make it, but I had a terrible experience here. Today I stopped in for (what I thought would be) a quick lunch. I ordered a turkey pesto sandwich, and the person who took my order asked if I wanted fruit or chips. I asked for fruit.

I waited OVER 20 MINUTES for my food to come out. FOR A TURKEY SANDWICH. Meanwhile, there are about 5 or 6 employees behind the counter doing NOTHING but chatting it up while I'm waiting way too long for a simple sandwich.

When it FINALLY came, there was no baby spinach on it, as the menu described. And the fruit? GRAPES. Just GRAPES. Give me a break!

The guy who brought my food out did not bring any utensils or napkins. Nothing.

The whole operation seems rather inefficient. When I ordered my food, they gave me a card with a number on it, and when the food comes out, the guy goes around to every table looking for the number, asking, "Are you Number 12? Are you number 12?" Come on! Either give out a stand so the servers can actually see the numbers, or just call "NUMBER 12!" when the food is ready.

I realize that new establishments have their kinks, but these problems are totally unacceptable (particularly calling a bowl with six grapes in it "fruit").

Positives: I like the feel and theme of the place, and the sandwich was pretty good, even without the baby spinach.

I intend to write a letter to the manager to inform them of my experience, because I would love this local business succeed. I think any new business is at least worth a second chance.

I was always angry that the place was never open yet when I lived up there. Thats too bad Gasm...I'll forever be a booster of Pershing St. If there was ever a street in St. Louis that spoke to me "I am a big city," it is Pershing.

I was in on Saturday for a coffee, nice place. My brother and sister-in-law were the first people to rent bikes ever! They were visiting from DC and really had fun cruising around the park and the CWE. I didn't try the food, but all the employees we spoke to were very nice. Glad the paper finally came down on that corner after 2+ years!

How's this place doing? Saw the addition of live music on Thursdays. Seems like a somewhat steady crowd whenever I drive by (app 3 times a week).

Unrelated- word on the residential building at the other end of Pershing at Union against Metro tracks? can't find the thread.

I drove by last Friday night around 8:30pm and was shocked at how busy they were. Didn't see a band or anyone playing music: just looked to be very crowded.

With those apartments kind of across Pershing being renovated into condos, the Debalivere neighborhood seems to be cleaning up its act.

Has anyone done their Sunday brunch yet? We were in there the other day getting coffee and saw the flyers for it.

Yep, unfortunately. Hopefully someone else can make it work there - it's a great space and great location.

from RFT comments
Suzanne M says:

They're definitely closed for good. I know the owner and went to their farewell party on Sunday night for their employees and fans. Sunday, January 10, was their last day. Lots of laptop campers there for the WiFi, but not enough food purchasers. They financially could not keep afloat. They made their decision to close about a week before and had one more blowout brunch on Sunday. They were only open for about a year and had rehabbed the building, even though they were just leasing the space. the owner had poured her life savings into the place. Was a great concept and location, but bad economy.

NOOOOOOO! That's a major bummer. They made the best latte in town. I guess it's Foam and Broadway Bean for me from here on out. Truly sorry to see Velocity go...
