Thankfully?

I heard the only part of the get-up he appreciates is a veil with a blinking red light on it.

Here's your chance to see a truly rare sight - Baby Pigeons!

A friend of mine has been observing a nest built into the ornaments above the fourth floor of the Ely Walker building (West wall, near Washington). The babies just hatched, and the parents have been bringing them food.

I saw a wild turkey on the Fontbonne campus yesterday. Now i'm used to seeing all sorts of wildlife (deer, fox, coyotes, pheasant, turkey, hawk, owl) out at my parents home in Des Peres but not in the cetral core... It was having a hayday scratcing up worms after the big storm.

The west wall of the Elly Walker building has become a regular pigeon rookery. There's currently at least three active nests, with eggs and young pigeons in various stages of development. It's fun to watch them practice flying from ledge to ledge, and then make a dramatic sweep over the CPI parking lot.

Babies in the city? I bet they'll be heading for the county.

Turkey are common on the N Riverfront Bike Trail and I ve seen deer up there. Coyotes in the 44/55 interchange. Birds of prey are too common now. Pay attention when you see a flock of birds circling, often they are fighting off an attacking bird.

Last week the wife had to stop to let the family of wild turkey cross the road before she could turn on to our street. Then yesterday evening, as we're watching the bats swarm above our balcony and sizable fox comes trotting down our driveway. Be on the look out.

I've seen a fox on the Enterprise campus in Clayton before, but wasn't as quick with my phone as you. Cool to see.

I have a couple Barred Owls that live by my new place just north of clayton in UCity (near Delmar). I wasn't expecting that when I moved in.

U City has a healthy population of owls and hawks. A neighbor of mine (a U City police officer) says that another officer saw a hawk carrying a small dog across Olive a few weeks ago. I see plenty of hawks and hear an owl almost every night, but I have my doubts about the ability of birds of prey to snatch pets. Nevertheless, the cop insists that he saw it.

I suppose that would depend on the size of the small dog. They do get pretty ridiculous. And maybe the officer was incorrect on some of the details but generally close: maybe it wasn't actually a small dog, but some other small mammal. And maybe it wasn't a hawk, but a large owl or even an eagle or vulture. Depends on how well he saw the thing, how the lighting was, how close he was, how good he is at identifying this stuff out of the corner of his eye or in the dark . . . The gist is probably correct. He probably did see a bird carrying something.

All that said, I used to work for St. Louis County's Vector Control. Saw lots of critters. Deer in parks, foxes, raccoons, (saw a family of them duck into a storm drain on my street a few months back) . . . there was a coyote that generally bedded down in the green area by our office we unofficially called "Knox County Park" after the veterinarian who was then in charge next door. Anyplace there are watercourses terrestrial critters will find a way in, and there are a lot of those in the area somehow. And of course anyplace there's game there will be predators.
