^Right. As a tourist I would likely go on the London Eye but not a roller coaster in the same location.

This. I know people who avoid the city like the plague. More than one has expressed a lot of interest in this as a repeated destination for their young families. That's a first.

shimmy wrote:And RW, I can understand either Hard Rock or Landry's leaving, but I'd like to see them stay. I think Union Station is a great location for Hard Rock, a more iconic (for lack of a better term) chain restaurant that is really geared towards tourists.
I'm fine with Hard Rock remaining...just not under the trainshed. If LHM is activating this trainshed space to the level I suspect, HRC will seem ill-fitting -- maybe retain them immediately inside the station (first, second or both floors), with outdoor seating under the trainshed proper. Then the HRC building -- which is right smack in the middle of the shed could be put to other use -- ferris wheel ticket purchases, ice skating rental (please, please, please!), an arcade if that's still a thing, or a shared kitchen for one of several booths or boxes that serve food throughout the trainshed area.

HRC just 'feels' like it should be down by Cupples Station or at BPV.

Too bad they can't build it under the shed. Interesting part from the SPACE plan is that the field as below grade.

Do MLS stadiums run north to south like American football stadiums? Or does it matter? I would think they have to run North South so the goalies won't have the sun in their eyes.

Also, they could put the field under the shed at Union Station, but the players might not like running into the steel posts holding up the roof.

How deep would they dig to get the field under the shed??? Plus move the metro link tracks.

I'm almost certain that proposal from Space came from a couple of years back. Never got traction and may have even been quickly pulled because St. Louis wasn't ready for MLS then.

As a result, I don't think that's a serious possibility these days. Union Station has a plan now. BUT, the principles they mention are still worth considering. And they can be applied very much so if the stadium goes to the west of Union Station.

Appears no construction work has started under the train shed. What's going on?

I am told there will be more announcements coming up soon. Some big, cool things, much more than what we have seen so far in the renderings.

One of the news channels had a story the other night that the hotel portion is completed (added rooms, etc.) and now its on to the entertainment work.

According to this week's Business Journal the hotel portion they are referring to as complete is renovation of the existing rooms not the conversation of retail space to new rooms. The are also looking to add pop up restaurants to the train shed, both local and national chains.

They really need to clean up the sidewalk and overall aesthetics of the area in front of the Grand Hall. Looks really bad with a mix-match of random patchwork concrete and asphalt.

Seems like we're past due on the major attraction announcement that I think was supposed to happen in Spring. Anyone hear anything?

^ me thinks the longer there's silence, the greater the possibility that plans incorporate an MLS stadium in some way.

Do you know something that hasn't been released yet? Will this information be released soon?

^ I know on the "Long Live Northside" post, Alex mentioned something about infill development West of Union Station at the 22nd street interchange. I wonder if that infill will include scrapping the 22nd street interchange, healing the street grid, placing in an urban soccer stadium with mixed-use infill TOD, that could potentially fall under the Northside TIF, which could help with stadium financing. One can dream.

You would hope MoDOT would get involved with the 22nd interchange as they're going to add exits at I-64 and Jefferson due to the NGA proposal. Would make sense to do it all together
