A German spinal implant and surgical device manufacturer has launched Ulrich Medical USA, a U.S. subsidiary based in Chesterfield, Mo.

Merle Symes was named CEO and Helmut Schoenhoeffer as vice president of business development and marketing of the domestic subsidiary. The subsidiary is in the process of hiring additional staff for the local office, according to a recent release.

Parent company Ulrich Medical is a medical technology firm based in Ulm, Germany. Ulrich has manufactured surgical devices for 95 years and introduced its first spinal implants, now sold worldwide, in 1978.

"We have unparalleled experience in manufacturing spinal implants and surgical devices, but we know that success in the U.S. will require customizing our technology to meet this market's needs," Schoenhoeffer said in a statement. "We have a strong commitment to listening to surgeons and responding to their needs."

The company's newest device, called obelisc, is a vertebral body replacement used for the surgical reconstruction of bone mass defects in the anterior thoracic and lumbar spine. It was approved for use in the U.S. in December.
