According to this week's City Journal, there is a cafe opening in the former Soda Fountain Square space called "Belgian Brew Cafe".

A Conditional Use Hearing will be held in Room 208 City Hall at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2013 in regards to this and other developments.

Could the Belgian Brew Cafe be the same as the "Belgian Beer Cafe", a series of concept bars started by InBev, currently located outside of North America only?

The InBev-related company doesn't list STL as one of their upcoming locations, only two in NY. I think it might be an independent.

I went last night.

They did a really great job converting the space from huge and hokey to intimate and classy. I kinda get the same vibe here that I get at Bar Les Freres..

The 2 specialty drinks i enjoyed were superb. I didn't pay to much attention wine selection but my industry friend said he hadn't heard of many of them so that's a good thing.

There are several good belgian beers on tap complemented by a few of the less common local brews. Lot's of Belgian beers by the bottle.

I'd describe the menu as "sophisticated" as there were several items I wasn't familiar with nor could pronounce. Oysters and muscle plates are prevalent. The food and atmosphere are great and I'd highly recommend checking it out.

Bum deal - loved this place, though only made it twice - The rest of Laff. Sq. does well, I wonder why this space has so much turnover

Like I said before the rent must be so steep it will be darn near possible for anyone to make it long term in this space.

It might even take a chain place (everyone gasps in horror) to survive. I'm not talking Applebees but maybe:
-Bar Louie?
-Lesters?
-Deweys Pizza?
-another Bailey's concept?
-bigger space for Bogarts?
-the group that does the Kitchen/Corner Pub/The Shack places?

Everyone that's been in there has been first timers/complete independents and that might not work for something (probably) so expensive

Actually I think that spot would be ideal for a Bar Louie location.

Or a more upscale sports bar. Tripel is a concept that would have worked better in a space like the former Niche location in Benton Park

I thought the space was great at Tripel. The food menu was quite eccentric and there wasn't a single more traditional (meat and potatoes) type item on the menu which crossed it off the list when going out with other couples.
