The little porcelain gas station at 2232 Thurman (corner of Cleveland) in the Shaw neighborhood is being nominated for the National Register of Historic Places. This is a common step in securing historic tax credits for renovation. Thurman Station was built in 1940 and expanded twenty years later.

I don't know the specific plans for the space. I think Olio on Tower Grove has shown how these buildings can find new life.

Anyone know whether the recently axed potential brewpub owners are still looking in Shaw? If it's not too small a space -- and if heels have cooled in Shaw  -- it could be really great. (I mean... Which would you rather have next door: a brewpub or an abandoned gas station?) Also, this property already saw a federal environmental remediation stimulus grant (I think) to remove the underground gas tanks. Environmental concerns were the "official" reason for pulling the previous proposal a few blocks away.

It would be cool to reuse old style gas pumps as beer pumps... fill up your growler n go.

My wife and I are developing the property for her catering business (The Social Affair), community cooking classes and a small market for premadefoods (i.e. chicken salad, Mac n Cheese, etc). We live in Shaw and love the building. It's been used for storage since 1984. This part of Thurman is considered by some as "downtown Shaw."
Lots of great things hapening in the area with more to come.

Here is a blog Michael Allen posted about it. He did an excellent job on our single property nomination. Craig Shields is handling the tax credit application and the architectual drawings.

Love the reuse of small gas stations happening in STL. Always makes me wonder if a new QuikTrip will ever be repurposed.

This used to be a QT, no? And there's this lovely old QT in Affton.

You didn't ask for a particularly good repurposing...

ha! I remember when it when both were QTs.

I actually liked the one on Gravois—it made the area feel contemporary and relevant.
Now it's all just weird. And the home-made Miniature Museum isn't helping.
