Don't shoot...because, remember, I'm catching up on all of this.

Has anyone heard of this development? This school is beautiful. There's an ad in SLU's paper this week which shows the building and advertises that the building has been turned into lofts.

Here is what the ad says:

Experience luxury loft living.

Originally constructed in 1904, the Theresa School has been thoughtfully restored and converted into thirty-five loft apartments.

Modern amenities combined with magnificent views of the downtown St. Louis skyline make for an exceptional dwelling experience.

INCLUSIVE LUXURIES:

-Broadband Internet

-Free Monitored Parking

-Washer/Dryer in every loft

-Water/Trash/Sewer

-Hardwood floors

-Central Heat and AC

-12-18 ft Ceilings

-Fitness Center

-24-Hour Maintenance

-24-Hour Monitored Security

-Massive Windows

The Gill's are doing this project. The school was almost bulldozed for a Walgreen's, until the genious school board figured out it was an Itner designed school.

Very cool! It's kind of isolated though. I guess it will appeal to SLU med students. I saw the ad for the Theresa Lofts in the U. News yesterday (I picked up a copy at Laclede Street Bar before the Billikens game), and it should be pretty sweet.

Actually, I kind of thought that was the neatest part. I know it's being marketed to SLU students, but it's kind of nice to have loft development that's not downtown.

I hope that it will encourage developers to build new housing developments (and retail as well) in the area around the Theresa School. The area directly behind SLU Med School is kind of a wasteland right now.

St. Louis Saves School, Scraps Plans for Strip Mall

Story by Salvatore Deluca

November 26, 2003

Of the 48 St. Louis schools William B. Ittner designed around the turn of the century, only one no longer stands. Last week the city nearly lost its second.

The city's school board took quick action Thursday when it reversed a controversial closed-session decision it made just two days before to sell the 98-year-old Theresa School to local developer Koman Properties Inc., which wanted to tear it down to build a strip mall anchored by a Walgreens and a Starbucks.

Here is an update by Martin Van Der Werf of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

SCHOOL DAYS: By now, it was supposed to be a parking lot for a Walgreens store.

Saved from the wrecking ball, the graceful William B. Ittner-designed Theresa School near Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital is taking shape as an apartment complex. Officially, the 36 units opened for viewing Sunday. Already, half are rented. Most were spoken for sight unseen.

Amy Gill, whose company, Restoration St. Louis, is renovating the building, is known for her sense of whimsy. And it is on display here.

Black slate kitchen countertops are meant to mimic chalkboards. Bathrooms are finished with tiny hexagonal tiles that might have been in 1930s public-school restrooms. In the old gymnasium, windows are 12 feet above the floor. Varnished wooden storage shelves, just deep enough to hold paperbacks, were saved and are being reinstalled in the apartments.

"I want people to be reminded of what this used to be" Gill said.

I hope the success of the Theresa School renovation encourages other developers to take on projects near the SLU med campus. There is a lot of room for improvement in that area!
