^That's a tough road to toll, competing against the Cardinals. I can't imagine the attendance would be very good if there is a competing Cards afternoon game. There is also potential for Blues playoff hockey games in the spring (and hopefully someday, late spring/early summer).
I wonder what attendance number the XFL is targeting. Would 10K be good, 15K-20K? Who knows. If they can differentiate their product from NFL football and make it interesting, without adding cheesy or quirky rules, I think the XFL has a better shot of succeeding. I think they need to go the more traditional route, versus the 'He Hate Me' route, which I perceived to be gimmicky. There is also a mindset that many of us would have to get over. I have always perceived football to be a fall sport. I just wonder how much people will get into football in the spring/summer. Will there be the "summer is baseball season" mentality. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the product looks like and what cities they choose. I'd like to see it succeed, but still prefer MLS if I had to choose. I agree that it would be nice to fill 5 more dates at the Dome.

When we had the Rams, the dome's availability was blocked out for half the year because of the NFL schedule. Everything revolved around the NFL schedule which made it impossible to secure some large events/conventions.
This sounds vaguely familiar—trying to recall an elevator conversation I had with my friends at the Sports Commission several years ago. It was something like (wiggle-wiggle) the NFL had 'first right of refusal' or had to approve any date during the season. It wasn't an ironclad blackout, but added a step that definitely made dates during the football season more difficult to book. My memory is all fuzzy, though.

I'd be surprised if the XFL would have the audacity to do that. And not surprised the NFL did.

As long as they wear spiked armor and carry morning stars, and the ball is wrapped in barbed wire, I'm down.

Otherwise, the "X" is bullsh*t.

Blood Bowl!

Salute of the Jugger!

LET THERE BE SPIIIIKEZ!

Okay. Maybe not.

Actually, in an ideal world I want it to be a faster and less spikey football. Fewer concussions. Less armor.

Welp, this seems to confirm it:

XFL is bringing pro football back to St. Louis in 2020
The professional football league promising to bring the 'fun' back to football is set to make a comeback in 2020.

ST. LOUIS - 5 On Your Side Sports Director Frank Cusumano has learned St. Louis will indeed be home to a team in the second incarnation of the XFL starting in 2020.

The league played one season back in 2001 and was known for its intense style, colorful personalities and big time backer Vince McMahon.

5 On Your Side has confirmed the new St. Louis XFL team will play 10 games in its inaugural 2020 season. Five of those will be played at the Dome at America's Center.

The XFL is expected to announce all of the cities receiving teams sometime next week.

St. Louis has been without professional football since the conclusion of the 2015 season, and the Rams' decision to move back to Los Angeles.
Dunno how viable a model it'll be with only 10 games a season (assuming that's the number they'll stick with going forward), and only 5 home games a year. But hey - it gets the Dome some extra use and might bring people Downtown a bit more often, which is always good. Here's to the success of the Neo XFL.

Seems like St. Charles is getting a new Indoor Football team to replace the River City Raiders, who apparently seem to have folded after last year's season. The "St. Louis Stampede" are set to take the Raiders' place at the Family Arena.

STL was awarded a professional roller hockey team in the NRHL. Even though this is not a major sport, I thought I mention this. We had the Vipers back in the 90s. Roller hockey is still huge in St. Louis. I have no idea where they will play. Here is a link to the NRHL site. Look under 'what's happening'. They mention STL being awarded a franchise.

I was just thinking how great the 'state of St. Louis sports' is these days. The Blues are   in the conference finals. The Cardinals are thriving as always (even though they are slumping at the moment). MLS is likely to pick St. Louis in their next round of expansion, which will lead to a beautiful stadium west of Union Station. The XFL just announced an awesome TV deal with ESPN & ABC. The SLU Billikens won the A-10 Tournament and got back to the NCAA Tournament...more big things to come.
The NHL All-Star Game is coming next year. The US Gymnastic Trials are coming here. The Enterprise Center is now positioned to host major events, due to upgrades. The Convention Center is being upgraded. The Blues and Chesterfield Ice Hockey are building new facilities. I would assume at some point, the PowerPlex is built. St. Louis
continues to have pro athletes succeeding at high levels in all sports from MLB, NHL,
NFL and NBA. The success of the PGA Championship showed the world that STL
can still host major events and will do a great job.

Looking forward, I see major soccer related events coming to STL, once the MLS
venue is completed. I see major youth and amateur events coming as well as a push for larger and improved youth sports venues. I think the PGA will come back. I hope
the XFL is a success. I'd like to see the Dome spruced up with advertisers and life in
general. I'm sure I'm leaving stuff out. All in all, I am very happy with the state of STL
sports compared to a few years ago. BTW..As always **** Kroenke & the Rams. :D

NOW, lets get your Blues - Sharks predictions - I got the Blues in 7.

As far as major soccer related events go, don't forget the US Women's National Team is playing one week from today in a friendly vs. New Zealand at Busch Stadium.

I was really hoping the Avalanche would win that Game 7 against the Sharks.

^ ^Yep..Forgot that one. I see a lot more of these types of games
coming here once the MLS venue is up & running.

I really think the MLS venue will be a great concert venue.
I base that on the size and potential layout. I have not been
to the KC MLS stadium for a concert, but when I've been there,
I thought it would be cool for a concert.

^ Me too! The Avs were a better matchup. I think the Blues are better positioned
with the current roster and goaltender, to beat the Sharks, compared to 2016.
The Avs speed would have given the Blues fits, but I think we beat them in 6.
The Sharks bring so many challenges. They have several good lines,
Pavelski, jumbo Joe & Couture disrupting things in front of the net with Burns firing
long range bombs from the point. I still think if the Blues play like they did Tues.
they can beat any team. Not mention, Martin Jones is no Ben Bishop.

Hopefully the Cup TV broadcasts will include some nice shots of the wider St. Louis area and all the things going on. Could be some nice exposure if done properly.

Blues winning the Western Conference Finals followed by a home doubleheader against the Royals - it’s a great time to be a St. Louis sports fan.

Even better, how about the Blues win the Cup, Cards get back into contention and MLS makes MLS2STL official! Has potential to be a great 2019, if everything falls into place.

Agreed! And it would be awesome for the 2020 US Olympic Womens and Mens Gymnastic Trails to be held at the "home of the 2019 Stanley Cup winners." NBCSports would definitely resurface that story.

Probably not the right thread but anyone have thoughts when MLS going to announce teams?

I'm assuming that they are going to wait until NBA and NHL finals are over with and before NFL pre season starts but that is only a guess on part

The MLS All-Star Game is August 1.

Wouldn't surprise me if they waited until then.

That's only a little over two months from now.

I was kind of wondering in what area does St. Louis rank unusually high because the per person denominator is so low, similar to crime rankings, but in a good way.  I was guessing we might have high sports attendance per city resident.  So I went to ESPN and got all the attendance numbers for the last full regular seasons for the top pro sports - NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, & MLS for each team, and added them up for each city.  Then I divided by city population and also metro population.  Even though St. Louis has no MLS, NFL, or NBA, we came out number 1 out of 50 when you divide total pro sports attendance by city population.  I also tried dividing by metro population, and we still came out pretty high at number 5 out of 50.  I posted the results in my wordpress blog. https://missouricurrent.wordpress.com/

Here are the rankings for Cities.

And Metros:
To be fair, the New York Giants, Jets, Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, Red Bulls, and NYC FC could sell out every single game in the next year, and New York City would still be pretty far down the list simply because their population is so massive (27 times the population of St. Louis) and there are only so many seats available that's it's literally impossible for them to be ranked #1 using this methodology.

2028 LA Olympics will feature 6 men's and 6 women's Flag Football teams.  There is a semi-pro league in the US in 4 cities operating now.  The St Louis Post ran this Reuters story today about 200 NFL players saying they would play in the Olympic version.  Would St. Louis support a flag football team?  Nn-contact sport.  It could be like soccer but with more scoring and less flopping.
