I recently got to try out The Oasis Restaurant on (8406) Natural Bridge where the original Spiro's used to be located. It was incredible! I'd argue that this is the best gyro I've had in St. Louis; I highly recommend trying it out. They are a Mediterranean restaurant that serves breakfast as well. It was sad to lose the Majestic Restaurant in the CWE, so it's nice to see a place that is sort of the new version. The prices are pretty cheap as well. Check it out!

I've been there twice, and the second time was way more organized than the first time. They've still got an identify problem between being a Greek restaurant (spiro's) and being a steakhouse diner thing, but that's entertaining. There's a decent sidewalk connection to it from the UMSL south station and the UMSL residence halls now that the natural bridge great streets project is done. I hope a lot of people start walking that way. When the new science building is done, that should put a bunch of grad students in very close proximity.

I kind of thought Greek steakhouses were a thing. They're all over Columbia. (G&D's, George's, Jimmy's, Angelo's I believe, and formerly Dino's) . . . Even Best Steakhouse had a little bit of that going on locally. That said, I'll give Oasis a try. That kind of recommends it.

I've been there with four different people and all of them were very happy about the food. Even a vegan.

I second Gyro Company on Gravois.
Can't wait for their next Yiro/Gyro location to open soon by IKEA.

Do all of these places cut their giro meat off of a large tube of meat cooking on a vertical spit? I haven't seen that anywhere in Saint Louis.

There used to be an international market place in a small strip mall in St. Ann near Northwest Plaza that did. I'm not sure if they do it anymore. That was like 15 years ago, and I don't make it that way very often unless it is to go to India Palace or the airport.vollum wrote:Do all of these places cut their giro meat off of a large tube of meat cooking on a vertical spit? Gyro Company on Gravois does, and I'll third 'em - they're fantastic.vollum wrote:Do all of these places cut their giro meat off of a large tube of meat cooking on a vertical spit? I haven't seen that anywhere in Saint Louis.

Berix Restaurant 2201 Lemay Ferry has has the vertical spits (they used to have a location on Gravois near Midwest Bank, but there was a fire 3 years ago and they never reopened, probably because the Bosnian population shift from south city to south county)
they make this using the same meat- Donar Kebab.
