Which building is this? Not the PW shoes loft right? Last I saw, they had removed all the windows were prepping to put the new ones in...

No, different building. The PW is being converted to apartments. Is this one of the buildings next to the parking lot where the livery stable was?

I don't have a good picture, but it's the building on the far right in this photo - the one with the orange brick:

I wasn't expecting that. Certainly not good news.

That's a large parcel, folks.

That means this block is destined for surface parking, too.

Just my guess.

Nothing could be worse for this slowly rising business district.

Good news! You can refile your protest letters to SLU. This is a renovation. I just drove by after class, and while the interior is being demoed, it looks like they are saving the exterior walls. The wall along Locust has bracing although brick along the roof has fallen, and there is tuckpointing and rebuilding going on along the alley. Paric is the GC. BTW, don't drive down the alley unless you are willing to back out or do some fun maneuvering .

Check out the paermits on GEO St. Louis. There is a $1.5 million renovation permit and a $100,000 interior demo permit.

That's great - thanks for doing the homework on this.

I saw the demolition dumpster and feared the worst.

PostNov 11, 2008#33

Okay, it has just started to sink in with me that SLU IS ACTUALLY PRESERVING A BUILDING. This is truly amazing.

Still pissed about the livery stable though. That building really would have helped bridge the PW Lofts with the rest of the district. Now it just seems to distant and disconnected.

That EXO building looks really cool. I like seeing the creative signage and lighting popping up around Grand Center. I've been in GC a few times in recent weeks and everyone I've been with has been impressed by the signage at Triumph, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the beacon on the Continental Building, etc. It's really starting to come around.

What I'd like to see next is Grand Center step up and help out the block of Olive between Spring and Vandeventer. They've already torn down an apartment building there that could have been put back to use as student housing. Whatever happened to the plans for a "media box" on the site of the garage at Spring and Olive. I'm fine with not using eminent domain to acquire the garage, but why not find a different spot for the "media box?" There's plenty of vacant land.

I was going to do a blog post on this, but I too checked Geo St. Louis and saw an interior demo permit, not a demo permit. So, I was heartened but still uneasy.

I just didn't want this to be a parking lot connected to their fresh, new one just to the west. Remember that SLU owns two buildings on the north face of that block. Scary to think what could happen...

Anyone know what this building with the SLU sign is? It says Morgens up top and stands next to Triumph at Olive/Lindell..

EXO is a club. It was billed as a high end restaurant and nightclub to the neighborhood when they were trying to get a liquor license. From what I have heard it is not a restaurant.

There are plans to renovate that cool old building on the South side of Olive near Vandeventer. They hope to turn it into artist's live/work units. I hope it happens, because it's a beautiful building.

Also, Grand Center Inc. is currently renovating a mid-century building at 3840 Washington for artist studios upstairs, and the new home of Pace Framing on the first floor ( 8) ).

That's great news on both counts. The building near Vandeventer is REALLY cool. Unfortunately, part of it was demolished a few years ago.

Not so fast, the southern wall, aka the orange one facing Locust was torn down today...

It's likely being relaid. Not too uncommon in a renovation like that. There wouldn't be tuckpointing on the back if this were a demo, and there would not be an interior/exterior alterations as per plans permit either. It looked to be in bad condition and had been remuddled up. I would assume storefronts will be rebuilt, or at least windows.

I work in SLU Libraries. This building at 3301 Locust is being renovated into a remote shelving facility for old and overflow holdings from all three of SLU's libraries. That wall should be back up shortly. There will be no storefronts up and very limited public access, but there will definitely be long-term occupancy. This building will not be joining the SLU parking lot holocaust. Once the books are in here, they'll stay here for a long, long time. It's a b**** to move a library.

That I don't know. I haven't seen the building personally, but I would imagine the exterior will be much the same as it already is. This will be a minimally staffed facility (it's really just a big storage room), and light can be an issue in preserving materials, so I doubt there will be many windows.

That said, I'm looking at the [proposed] floor plan as we speak, and it looks like there will be an office, a break room, and a conference room all clustered around the dock entrance on Locust. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some windows in those rooms.

PostNov 20, 2008#49

Okay, I just drove by. I'd heard that the wall was down, but I didn't realize it was the street wall or that it was THAT down. I really don't know what it will look like.

Most of the interior walls are down, with new cinder blocks going up. Exterior wall work being done too as of yesterday.
