Does anyone know what, if anything, is planned for the old Galaxy rock club on 1227 Washington Ave?

I would love to see a new popular rock club with good progressive acts, similar to the Metro or the Empty Bottle in Chicago. I think something like this would fit in perfect if it was handled properly, and would attract even more people to the area from around St Louis who follow new bands. Something like what the Rocket Bar attempted to be. I think that club was just a little too far out from the action.

Does anyone know if the Galaxy plans to reopen or if something else is going to move in or what the story is?

Presently, there are renovations going on within the space. It seems that there's either a new bar or resturant of some sort going into the space.

I still think they should open a rock club of this sort along Washington Avenue. Tasteful, Good atmosphere, and contemporary progressive artists. This fits the demographic of the loft dwellers perfectly.

The two things I would most like to see along Washington would be a rock club and a movie theatre or screening room of some kind that would show art house movies. People come downtown and they now have restaurants, bars, a cafe or two, but they need some more entertainment venues. The movie theatre seems like it is less likely to appear soon, but I think a credible rock club would be great.

Again, I would love to open a movie theater/museum in downtown St. Louis, but mine would be dedicated to SCI-Fi/Horror Flix. Imagine, going downtown to check out your favorite horror movie, and then to be able to wonder around a replica of the actual movie set. That's what I imagine.

I think that is cool, but I don't know if I like the idea of limiting it to a genre. Imagine seeing Citizen Kane or the Godfather one day, in a theatre akin to your description, and seeing a newer second run film like the Life Aquatic another day, and a horror film like Night of the Living Dead or Army of Darkness another evening. Just a bunch of classic cinema peppered with newer foreign cinema, or other films not typically shown on a screen in St Louis. I think to have something where you wander around the set would take a lot to orchestrate and keep up if the films are to change regularly, but it is something to think about. But simply showing first rate classics, maybe with some quality dinner theatre food and drink, would be an excellent idea! If only we weren't simply musing.

This reply may be a bit late, but I have some info on the old Galaxy site.

The construction you saw was a bunch of UMSL art students fixing the space up for an exhibit. The show is down now, but I hear that UMSL was so impressed with the response that they are considering using that space for a permanent downtown outpost, similar to what Wash U has with the Des Lee Gallery up the street. That, along with the Philip Slein Gallery, Jim Schmidt Contemporary Art, The Third Floor Gallery, and the soon to open Ellen Curley Gallery next door to Macro Sun would go a long way to making that stretch of Washington a real destination for the art crowd. (I hope so, as a partner and myself recently purchased a custom picture framing shop and relocated it to that area)

Also, I heard from one of the McGowans that an ice cream shop will be moving into the empty building on the Northeast corner of 14th and Washington, and a new restaraunt is taking over the space where Capoeira Brasil was at 1317 Washington. I believe that another restaraunt is working on the Goodman's building next door to Flanery's, and I have seen architect/contractor types at the site making notes and drawings.

Good stuff, framer. I thought the UMSL exhibit was a great idea, and it would be so cool for them to have a permanent exhibition space on Washington. Having UMSL artists along with Wash U. art students and the artists in the ArtLoft Building will really help foster a sense of community - when you have so many artists living/working/socializing in one area, who knows what kind of great creative ideas will be born. SLU should consider doing the same thing, although I think that SLU's art program is pretty small.
