Not sure if I am late on this but I didn't find it in a search.

Long time downtown burger joint, Swifty's appears to be closed. It was dark when I went by today. Didn't notice and signs saying they were closed for vacation.

Didn't eat there much so I am partly to blame, but the number of lunch options in downtown is decreasing not increasing lately.

Don't think so. My crew has tried a hotdog stand, two Lebanese restaurants, a casino burger bar, an Irish pub, and a new sushi restaurant in just the last couple of months.

FYI. http://www.urbanstl.com/viewtopic.php?t=6025

As far as number of eats downtown, I fear for Papa Fabarre's and (if it's still open) the Macy's buffet, as well as Teutenberg's :(.

I would be extremely sad if we lost Papa's - aside from being a true institution, it serves some really decent, inexpensive lunch. And the onion soup... nothing like it after walking to Macy's on a cold day.

The Macy's buffet is still open. I wouldn't mind if Teutenberg's closed so it could be replaced by something that serves decent food.

It seems to me that a lot of the lunch options are heading west. When I think of the newer places that have opened recently, they are all west of the old Wehbe's and Swifty's.

Times have changed. That used to mean Maryland Heights. Now it means 11th Street.

Question answered. You're welcome!

Yep...and when you're talking places like that, the burden of keeping them open falls much more squarely on the residents rather than the transient daytime and special event population. For the same reason that downtown didn't/doesn't have a pharmacy, hardware store, laundromat, vet, bookstore, is the same reason that you can't have whatever food you want at 11pm; the 10-15000 people don't patronize them.
