Washington University and City Hall are partnering on what they’re calling the “Sustainable Land Lab,” a contest that will hand over four vacant lots in the city’s Old North St. Louis neighborhood for two years to whoever can come up with the best ideas to put them back into productive use. Organizers are expecting to hear from artists, designers, entrepreneurs, urban farmers and more.

The competition will open this weekend, at a Sustainable Cities conference at Washington University. Initial proposals for one of six empty lots are due in December, and will be winnowed down in three rounds of presentations and judging. Up to four winners will be chosen in April and will get a two-year lease and $5,000 in seed money.

Five grand and a two year lease on one lot... Not a ton of incentive, but I suppose better than nothing?

I'm really looking forward to following the progress of this little experiment. If the quality of the proposals is high we could possibly see some imaginative ideas.

LOOKING FOR A TEAM TO SUBMIT THIS IDEA TO THE COMPETITION

I want to put water fountains on these lots for kids to play in, people to water plants with, and to add beauty to the neighborhoods.

These can be simple fountains:
- a big basin to catch the water, maybe cement floor w metal sides
- a 7 foot pipe in the center
- a plate shaped head for water to drip or spray from
- all the drain plumbing, pump mechanics and electrical setup

It would encourage neighbors to put in a bench and build a garden around it. Basically it's an organically grown park.

I am looking for a team to submit this idea to the competition. Ping me if you like the water fountain idea.
