Even though I had already noticed that there was somebody actually at the SBC about once every 2 weeks (meaning the 1 or 2 employees, not customers). Drove by yesterday and there is a big dumpster outside and the windows are boarded up. The door was propped open and the place was a wreck. Looks like it's closing down to me. Anyone know any different? I know its probably not exactly a really high profile business, but the Clayton/Tamm, Tamm/Wise intersections are getting pretty depressing.

They're renovating.
An admin needs to clean up ASAP.

Good, thank you all. I had posted this and then thought that they probably wouldn't pull dumpsters outside to close it down. Thanks for the cleanup. I'm supposed to be smarter than that. But I mean, seriously, there are never any employees there either. My bad, regardless. Feel like a major DB.

They're not a traditional bakery. It's not like you can walk in and buy some brownies or a loaf of bread. I think they're almost exclusively wedding cakes.
My husband and I own Sugaree Baking. When I first read this post I was upset by the assumptions that JuiceInDogtown made. The first being that we were going out of business. We have been at this location for 10 years. We own and live in our building which was built in 1896. We have spent at least $150,000 in tuckpointing, inside and outside painting, lighting, equipment for the bakery,3 phase electrical and plumbing. We are about to complete an 8 plus week and $25,000 renovation of our front 2 rooms. We took up 5 floors on top of the origanal sun pine floors. We tore out the awful drop ceilings and plasterand replaced the front room with a real tin ceiling and a regular ceiling with crown molding in the second room. We replaced all the 8' 3 part base boards with base boards we had made. We replaced the old push button swithches with reproduction. We put in bead board and wallpaper and subway tile around my sweet kitchen sink. All new light fixtures. We even put in new air ducts so we could put in antique floor registers. We have our front door boarded up as we are have the old door reburbished and the hardware plated. I have had the best people working with me. People who love old buildings as we do. jim Abelm , the floor Guru, Jack from Folkweave, who knows everyone who can fix quirky old stuff. Our carpenter and friend, Josh, who is so proud of this job that he keeps bringing people by to show it off. The second assumption is that no one works here. My head baker gets here at 6:00 am and then others follow. My payroll would indicate I have some workers. And if you come by around midnight you will see the lights on in the back bakery, as my husband and I don't finish up until then and during wedding seasons I often work until 2 or 3 am. We are not a traditional walk in bakery (it says wholesale on the front door). We only make dessert and we supply restaurants, hotels, caterers. The other half of our business is wedding cakes. We just had pictures of our cakes in two national bridal magazines. We also do a large gift giving cookie business in November and December. We sell those retail by order and they are carried at the Smokehouse, Ladue Market, Mary Tuttle, Schneidhorst and this year at Straubs. I am proud of what we do here (baking from scratch and using no trans fats) I am also proud of what we have been doing to restore this building. We love the city and especially Dogtown, Moving here 10 years ago was the best thing for our business. So JuiceInDogtown, were alive and well and our POD is back and ready to be unloaded, as soon as The Floor Guru Jim Puts the 5th and final coat on our floors tomorrow. We have a few details to finish. Oh, the front door!!! Please stop by and peak in the windows....

Sugaree Baking company in Dogtown has opened to the public after 10 years of just wholesale baking for restaurants and wedding cakes. They are making wonderful pies of many different flavors Friday and Saturday every week. I have had the peach, cherry, pumpkin and chocolate cream which are all delicious. The crust is fantastic. Thankfully they have little 6 inch ones as well as larger ones.
For Dogtown history buffs, Sugaree is located in the old Keis bakery on Tamm which opened in the 1890's. Apparently all of the counters and cases are original. They did a major rehab recently and it is really beautiful. I love the new tin ceiling. It is really a throwback in time to when you would go to a corner bakery instead of getting everything in the grocery store.
If you are a pie lover, you will love this!

$5 for a homemade 6" pie? That's awesome. I will definitely be in, especially before Christmas to take home for the family. Maybe that will make up for my being an idiot and starting this thread.

So I came back to check if anyone had responded to my post about Sugaree and their pies and was surprised to find it merged with this thread. I didn't know about it previously. I will check in the future and just add to a thread.
Just a little more info. In response to not being able to buy brownies-There were brownies and blondies as well as mini cupcakes of various types. There were also really nice looking cookie boxes for gifts.
I am starting to think of Friday and Saturday as "pie days". They are that good. I don't know if I should be thankful or scared!

Wife & I got a few pies a couple months back and accidentally left most of them back at the parents house in southern Illinois - they really liked them.
Wife just got her email from them about Memorial Day, and found out that apparently Albert Pujols and his wife are quite the fans of Sugaree.

Albert and Deirdre Pujols dropped by last Friday on the way to Busch Stadium to get pie for the Cardinals players and some pie to take home. They have been our customers for years but they hadn't seen our renovation of the bakery.
Just for the record, Albert's favorite pies are Banana Cream and Custard.
