How is the city still doing this - and especially in those neighborhoods?

The Aldermen and Politics. I'm not opposed to the closures as long as the local Alderman in the Ward where closures will happen has the support of people on the street targeted for closure. If it was a group decision, so be it.

It's being moved to the east of the property.
Some other people have here told me the Waterman-DeGiverville alley will be restored after construction.

I don't know what to believe, but given how unethically this whole project has proceeded, I'm more inclined to believe that whatever screws current residents the hardest will be the way they go.

My understanding was it'd be whatever the residents wanted, but I never heard what that was.

I was listening to this Freakonomics podcast about roundabouts. In many areas where the Schoemehl pots are used, couldn't the City try to build some nice roundabouts instead? I feel like it would have the same traffic calming and crime preventing effect as the pots, while removing this massive barrier in neighborhoods. I know some spaces are too narrow to work but there must be some good candidates. This photo from the NextStl article on this topic could be a great start as it's nearly a roundabout as is...

That would be huge. I would love to see the Louisiana bike corridor filled with these to keep non local traffic out of the way. Plus these could certainly be added to a few existing blockages I can think of in Shaw, Fox Park, and the CWE. So annoying to have to get off your bike to cross these.

The other egregious one that stands out to me that is public is Kingsbury Square Gates. I’d love to pry open the gates to Portland Place and the like, but I get that it’s private property and residents would internally have to make that decision.

You can just walk (or drive) into Portland Place from Lake Avenue at Lindell.  Not that they're particularly fond of that (and security will eventually ask you to leave) but there are no gates there.

Yeah, I have done that. I’d bike down Portland place every day for my commute if I could. A shame that it’s private.

^ hahaha, that’s funny.

Oddly enough, I have photographed their's a few times from Kingshighway.  Surprised I haven't been served a cease and desist letter yet.  One of the guys I used to carpool with in elementary school owns a home in there.  Maybe he could get me a pass ;)

Pauline and Cote Brilliant were supposed to be closed at Union under different BBs in February…I guess those didn’t happen.

Also, am I reading the second link wrong or is that a reopening? Or did the street have a blockage removed prior and is now being closed again?

There needs to be a citywide moratorium on this sh*t. It’s really a shame that residents in many city neighborhoods think further severing and cutting themselves off from the rest of the city is somehow going to improve things for them. Just pure ignorance.

It's confusing

BB75 "This Board Bill repeals Ordinance Number 68455, authorizing the Director of Streets to open the permanently closed San Francisco Avenue 387 feet east of the eastern curb line of Kingshighway Memorial Boulevard and containing an emergency clause."

Ord 68455 "BOARD BILL NO. 180 INTRODUCED BY ALD. CHARLES QUINCY TROUPE An Ordinance to repeal Ordinance #64557, approved January 15, 1999, authorizing the Director of Streets to permanently close San Francisco Avenue 387 feet east of the eastern curbline Kingshighway Blvd."

Ord 64557 "An ordinance authorizing the Director of Streets to permanently close San Francisco Avenue 387 feet east of the eastern curbline of Kingshighway Blvd. and containing an emergency clause."

So close it with 64557, then open it with 68455, then close it with BB75?

The second one is reopening, it was previously blocked back in the late 90s.  To help visualize what exactly is going on, here's a really bad map view of the closings / one opening:

The three southern most closures along Union make me believe that there's been a lot of complaints or issues with vehicles using those side streets as "fast lanes" to cut over from Kingshighway or fly past the Dr. MLK / Union intersection.

San Francisco implemented a Schoemehl Pot plan of their own during the pandemic, and is keeping a few street entrances blocked potentially permanently.  Not exactly equivalent but certainly interesting.  https://www.sfmta.com/projects/slow-streets-program
