^ here was my comment on that in the state of downtown thread...

Downtown/Midtown Atlanta's got it going on and they are making me cry!

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/blog ... o-the.html

NCR Corp.'s decision to bail from buttoned-down Duluth, Ga., to entrepreneurial Midtown underscores a cultural shift in the 130-year-old company....

In locating to Midtown — the nucleus of Atlanta's tech and creative class — NCR is making a play for the Millennial workforce that prefer the bustle of in-town living and have no patience for long commutes to the 'burbs.

Meanwhile, we'll be adding hundreds of IT workers for World Wide Tech and MasterCard out in the 'burbs.

St. Louis-based app making all kinds of news. Was on NBC's Today Show this morning.

Click link here.

[Report doesn't mention it's a St. Louis-based app, but footage shows inside of CORTEX's @4240 Building]

Trust me, Atlanta is adding in the 'burbs too.

Also, Atlanta's Midtown tech district was in the works long before St. Louis' so what's happening in Midtown ATL didn't happen overnight.

But with CORTEX, St. Louis is on the cusp. It's a game changer.

Too bad that St. Louis does not have a Georgia Tech-like university to help feed CORTEX.

^ True enough but CORTEX was envisioned as a bioscience center I believe because of the huge and respected presence of Wash U research/Wash U Medical School.

Does anyone recall how many workers Station Digital was to bring to The Highlands? I believe they have officially moved but I don't see any signage yet on the building, which I believe was something they looked forward to having.

PostJan 22, 2015#256

^^ no doubt Atlanta is booming on an incredible level throughout the metro... really impressive TOD stuff they also have been doing with MARTA.

As for Cortex, what a boon for us... I was on Duncan/Boyle intersection today with BJC cranes ahead of me and IKEA cranes to my behind. Boyle all ripped up and to the left with the Commons work, @4240 nice and shiny and with the new rooftop sign (and just one space left on the directory sign!) and to the right with Tech Shop poised to begin. Beautiful stuff at this epicenter of construction. But at the same time it is kind of scary to think about how critical success of this initiative is to the city's future... mediocrity is not an option!

PostJan 22, 2015#257

^ with respect to that one remaining space on the Cortex tenant sign, Post-Dispatch behind the Wiz of Oz screen just reported that a cyber-tech company named Bandura is moving in. 7 employees to start with and 20 more slated for the next year...

http://www.stltoday.com/business/column ... 0d0d7.html

Bandura began at the Cyber Maryland program in Baltimore to commercialize security technology developed with the Defense Department and its parent company, TechGuard Security, which has its corporate office in Chesterfield.

Magee said Bandura had considered office space in Silicon Valley and New York but chose St. Louis for its central location. She cited the CIC-St. Louis' proximity to Washington University and the area's reasonable cost of living as factors in the relocation, which occurred about two months ago. Bandura is retaining a satellite office in Baltimore.

Speaking of cybersecurity, I believe that is one of the programs Webster will be having at the Gateway Campus downtown.

they're next door to one of the highest ranked med schools in the US (currently #6) and they're moving to be closer to UT Austin's med school, which doesn't even rank in the top 50? it must have been a talent pool decision. there's no way they'll get more/better data at UT Austin than they would at Wash U.

Maybe someone should approach some of their top people who don't wish to move about staying and starting a similar enterprise here.

Or maybe, they just would rather live in Austin than St. Louis. Not always about rankings or cost of labor.

sounds like that is part of it; he was definitely wanting to get out of the Lou:

The company employs 14 people and generated just under $2 million in 2014. Palmer said the company is still looking for office space and other business basics in the Austin area, and said he was won over when he visited family during South by Southwest last year.
"We're looking at growing the company and I looked at Boston and Silicon, but when you add in the medical school going in there Austin became a place of real interest," Palmer said.
"It has a favorable business environment and I thought we'd be a nice fit in the ecosystem, especially given the views I've heard of [medical school dean] Clay Johnston."
Palmer said the company is expected to grow to 50 employees after it relocates to Austin, and deals such as its still-developing partnership with the National Football League will give its data platforms a higher profile. The NFL deal came about because former NFL player Todd Steussie is PotentiaMetrics' executive vice president and the leader of its PotentiaPRO division.

Time to call the Jack Dorsey complaint line again... twitter's ATL office is expanding from 15 to about 70:

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/blog ... -city.html

I hope twitter is working on setting shop up in the city; even a dozen or two staff would be nice to land.

As far as the ATL location, I gotta say I love this Ponce City Market mixed-use development:

it is a $200 million mixed-use redevelopment in a huge former warehouse in the Old Fourth Ward near downtown and midtown and adjacent to the Beltline trail on the abandoned rail line. It already has a number of start-ups and established firms, and apparently google is also scouting it.

Believes this falls under the every lit bit helps column

http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/blog ... ology.html

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon on Tuesday released more than $21 million in funding for priority initiatives.

Among those was $3.5 million for the Missouri Technology Corporation, a public-private partnership created by the Missouri General Assembly to promote entrepreneurship.

I agree that $3.5 million is a nice bump for MTC which has had about $3-$5 million a year to invest in startup companies and ecosystem. This was additional money over and above the past few year amount so it was a definite win and will make a difference.
