$2M Expansion for St. Margaret's in the Shaw Neighborhood.
Its construction will mark the first new free-standing Catholic parish school building in the city in 50 years.

That's very exciting news, especially considering the fact that some south city Catholic schools have closed during the last decade, and two more (Immaculate Heart of Mary and Saint John the Baptist) will close at the end of this school year.

It's really good for the area as well, particularly since SMOS attracts a fairly sizable non-Catholic student population compared to most Catholic schools.

Looks like the new building will hug the street.

I love sidewalk-hugging buildings as much as the next guy, but I do wonder if street activity could be so close as to be disruptive to the learning environment?

Why does the rendering of the new building include a boarded up window on the corner?

I'm assuming it's a built in place for seasonal banners/media. And they use the community garden on the NE corner so the students already walk along these sidewalks in the spring and fall. It's a nice bridge of sorts from the main school building to the garden across the street.

My prior post was admittedly facetious, but perhaps they could have shown better what it is supposed to be. If it's for banners and other media, maybe they could show it being used as such? It just looks odd as-is. Also if that is its use I wonder why there's not sidewalk running up to it. Do they expect folks to walk through the grass to read what's posted there?

It's a minor complaint. I'm happy to see the building being built, and especially so that it's urban in form.
