I was kind of surprised we didn't have a general weather channel. But just FYI: the "southern" snow storm that's been talked about for the last week appears to have shifted its path back north which means its headed for Missouri Friday night... could be a big one as some models are showing 8-12+ inches.

It's obvious whatever snow we get won't melt for many days. Can our local gov'ts think ahead and prepare?
Also businesses and their landlords need to be reminded of their obligation to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of accumulating snow.

Whatever falls will be a dry powdery snow depending on how cold it will be

Hey guys, I’ve been walking around Laclede near Cortex and guess what? Narwhals is open! I know what you’re thinking, but it’s cool: They have traditional bar drinks as well as frozen drinks. So I got a manhattan so I could at least pretend to be warm.
Like clockwork for Reddit. Amazing how vocal people are about their laziness.
Seem to have gotten around 9 inches so far in South City. Shoveling has been a bit of a nightmare as the snow is so powdery it is just blowing everywhere.

OK, I’ll get it going. Where TF are the plows? S. Grand doesn’t appear to have seen a single plow yet

I’ve seen plenty of plows downtown but they can’t get it all cleared, Tucker is now getting very slick.
I was told theyd be working all night to stay on top of it!!?? What happened??

They did, when too much snow falls too quickly it gets packed and plows can’t get to the pavement. Should be better by Tuesday night after a sunny Tuesday
This should have been done yesterday morning

The city ever plan on plowing side streets? Maplewood didn't bother to plow my street this storm so it's kind of a PITA to get in/out of my neighborhood.
Depends on how you define side streets. And it's hit and miss. Some residential streets were plowed at least once, some were plowed until clear, and some not at all. In my case, mine was plowed Monday evening (right after I dug out my car) but hasn't been since. So by tonight, it was pretty uneven and slushy meaning it will be ice tomorrow morning. Additionally, while my street was plowed once, the access street my street feeds into was not plowed at all, meaning it too is slushy and will be a skating rink in the morning.Trololzilla wrote:The city ever plan on plowing side streets? I think it makes little sense to plow residential streets because 1) Parking, 2) The tire grooves are way more predictable than the mess that is there now, and 3) You can't possibly properly plow every side street, so I don't see why they're bothering. I drove by some streets today that were totally untouched by anything but others plowed clean? I don't get it.
On the flip side, plowing the access streets makes more sense because theyre often more used than residential streets and have much less predictable tire grooves, meaning the frozen slush is far harder to drive on than the simple frozen grooves of residential streets.

I live on Hickory on the northern edge of Lafayette Square. A truck came by today and plowed it, it was unmarked. Maybe a contractor? Missouri was also plowed. Neither are snow routes.
I would agree with stlAlex on his comments about streets on above as someone whose life has gone from Minnesota/Fargo ND to being a homeowner in Chicago area to St. Louis (with sideways interval out west) to now Dallas. MN/Fargo a whole different level of winter preparedness & resources, Chicago definitely worthy and expected of some major winter resources where as not surprised that my Dallas street is being cleared by mother nature, street traffic and no snow plows for probably the one time event for the winter season.
However, St. Louis is in tough spot with changing climate. Does city need a huge winter resources and or spend a lot of money to clear everything all the time? While at same time, winter will be warm periods with bigger storms when winter events do happen. To me the middle of the road is probably the answer where resources and efforts are too keep main roads, arterials open and let mother nature, street traffic and residents clears the cars on side streets & alleys. Obviously some other services will be disrupted like here in Dallas this week. With an extended cold after a storm you muster private resources. But of course, still need to plan either way. .

A lot of complaints from downtown firms about snow removal. Other then main roads like Tucker, market and 14th, the one ways have been a nightmare and those usually lead to garages
9th between Clark and Walnut last night was a full ski show. I slipped and slided all over through there. Can attest.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑5:41 PM - Jan 28A lot of complaints from downtown firms about snow removal. South city residential streets getting plowed clear while north city streets get ignored is some of the most predictable sh*t ive ever seen.

As with everything, it's not as simple as the media makes it out to be. My whole northside neighborhood has been plowed, alleys included since about 4am Tuesday. It's quite drivable as long as you can get out of your parking spot. I haven't been even close to around the entire City, but it seems like residential streets vary across the spectrum, but that's expected. Snow routes are more or less clear at this point, with some outliers. City crews still need to figure out how to do a more effective job quicker, but at least they didn't just call it a job completed 36 hours after the storm like they appeared to a year ago.
I wish people cared even half as much about sidewalk conditions as the streets.

Given that it was 9 inches of snow with unusually frigid temperatures, I think the City did fine. The snow didn't stop falling until Sunday afternoon and while Monday was rough things were pretty cleaned up by Tuesday.
