Southwest is pulling out of Dayton and adding CVG. It will be interesting to see if they route some of there connection traffic through us. The new schedule comes out tomorrow so I would think we would find out then.

^ likely start small to see how other parties react. That and likely there just isn't enough planes to add much at this point due to fleet retirements and with the 737 MAX coming online later this year.

Also saw this was a result of them closing Dayton and Canton/Akron, the latter of which they added a 2nd St. Louis to Cleveland flight to add to Cleveland as a result. Which that is a good add for business travel since there are several other places where a 2nd daily flight would help like Pittsburgh and Milwaukee among others for day trippers.

I'm actually very surprised by this, as Southwest has said I think last year even that CVG was not included in their long term plans. I hope they do well, as CVG is really sad to fly into. Surprising that DL STILL has not dehubbed them yet, but I would imagine that is bound to happen sooner rather than later.

quick look at the Southwest schedule extension looks like they are adding a Saturday/Sunday nonstop to Charleston, SC. This is a bit of a surprise but a weekend route to a tourist destination is low risk and has potential. Somewhat related due to connectivity during the week for there and elsewhere is adding a 3rd daily to Nashville, which would be good for connections on either end and business travel. Also found was 2nd daily to San Diego with an early AM departure from here along with the aforementioned added Cleveland flight. Not sure what else is added and how much of this is just summer peak or permanent add.

Also thinking, the 2nd San Diego could be related to the losing slot and flight to SNA.

^ good info imperial. I hadn't had a chance to see the options but I did see that our flight total will be 108 daily for Southwest. So that is good.

PostJan 05, 2017#2783

The one thing that drives me insane with Southwest is the flight to SFO and OAK almost always leave within 5 minutes of each other daily. I am sure there is a reason for it but I don't know why they don't spread them out more. When I go out there I could fly to either airport, I would rather have a morning and an evening option.

STL-CHS weekend only service is the only new market in the Southwest schedule.

Frequency changes from April to June:

STL-BOS +1 (4 daily)
STL-CLE +1 (2 daily)
STL-BNA +1 (3 daily)
STL-PHX -1 (3 daily)
STL-RDU +1 (2 daily)
STL-SAN +1 (2 daily)

Overall net gain of 4 flights to a total of 106 (if I counted correctly).

Did anyone else get Cancun? Also, when did KSTL pass KBNA on the SWA totem pole?

You are right. I did add the "if I added correctly" disclaimer!

Fort Lauderdale got service to Belize, Cancun and Montego Bay. That's the only new international routes.

Also, any word if Lambert cracked 13 million passengers this year?

I don't think BNA ever was ahead of us, Southwest wise. At least not recently. I could be wrong, I have only been closely following things for a few years though.

They were SWA's southeast focus city about 6 years ago, but St Louis and Atlanta have been given a lot of the frequency they used to have.

I think we were on pace for close to 14.

We were at 10,388,786 after September.

Lambert has said 10% growth for most of the year so if you go off last years numbers.

12,752,331
+ 1,275,233 (10%)
14,027,564

Obviously, this is a rough guess.

ohh got you. I just figured we had been one longer so we had more, but what you says makes sense. I know the last two years we have had more, before that I haven't looked. They haven't been over 100 flights. They are at 99 this summer.

14 is going to be a stretch, but 13 should be a piece of cake.

Through September, we're at +9.0% compared to last year.

If numbers for 2016 match 2015, we'd be at 13.6 million. Keeping a 9% increase, we'd end up just over 13.9 million. We'd need a 12% increase in Q4 over 2015 to break 14 million.

Interesting on note in the airports blog post about this is mentioning Terminal 2 renovation and working with Southwest on it. Is that the possible added gates that is really half of D or other things? Since it sounds like its looking to make things run better in the terminal for a better experience to deal with the growth the last couple years and likely future growth. Also noted is that most the adds are seasonal ones with most being ones done before, with the Nashville and Cleveland frequency adds are beyond summer. Odd is how San Diego only last year became a year round route from seasonal and now adding seasonally a 2nd one, and that Boston which had a peak summer add is still getting one after announcing an added frequency starting this spring making 4 flights a day in summer.

Scary situation in Fort Lauderdale. Sometimes I wonder how security procedures work at Lambert and how secure the facility is.

No matter where you place a physical security layer, it does not eliminate the possibility of an attack.

Obviously, weapons are not allowed through security checkpoints -- as a result, we have not seen an airside attack in many years. However, this leaves open the possibility of a landside attack like the one today.

Some airports (like Istanbul) have an initial security checkpoint at the entrance to the departures level of the terminal terminal with the "usual" security checkpoint before going airside. However, this didn't prevent an attack in the baggage claim area and the roadway outside the terminal in June 2016.

No matter where you put the first security barrier... you can still attack outside of it.
