So I was wondering today, if it is possible for there to be passenger-car ferries on the Mississippi? I do know of the one up in Grafton, but I was thinking what would it be like to have a passenger and/or car ferry that runs from Downtown to points south? Not a year round ferry but maybe in the summer? Also, I'm no expert on river traffic or anything regarding it so if my thought process here is completely flawed let me know.

Assuming the new riverfront attracts more tourists i could imagine excursion ferries to ESTL someday (obviously not right now). I'm imagining a canal dug to horse lake which drop passenger off at Cahokia mounds. But car ferries are not a competitive service to a free bridge.

Chalupas, what you're describing reminds me of the Amtrak Auto-train, which runs from Northern Virginia to Central Florida. While potentially charming, I think people would rather just drive to Cape Girardeau, Cairo, Memphis, Paducah, Caruthersville, or Evansville and have the extra time there than slowly chug down the river on a car ferry.

You can take a Riverboat down to Kimmswick, MO (in Jefferson County) from the Arch Grounds, but it's just an old fashioned riverboat, not a car ferry.

I agree, I feel the majority would rater drive, but what about on a vessel like the ferries on the Thames in London? Those move at quite a clip.

Right. Like a fast commuter boat. I used to wonder about one from St Charles to downtown. But the chain of rocks lock and damn might be a problem. What is the fastest you could get from St. Louis to Memphis or New Orleans on a boat.
