I would say it is safe to say they will be charging. They also are expanding Puck's and the museum shop.

So it looks like construction for the David Chipperfield designed addition to the St. Louis Art Museum is going to be pushed back a little while:

Plans are still moving ahead for the new wing, but even before the official announcement, museum representatives said that fundraising on the project was going more slowly than anticipated. While the museum has secured $120 million in private funding for the project, it cannot hire a contractor before that last $5 million is on-hand, said Jennifer Stoffel, the museum’s director of marketing.

“We know we’re not going to make it by the end of the year, and we still haven’t set a [new] date” for groundbreaking. “We’re still moving ahead though,” Stoffel said.

Still, the board and staff reaffirmed their commitment to the museum’s planned $125 million expansion in Forest Park and anticipate breaking ground by the end of this year.

That's excellent news! It's going to be nice to have another art museum designed by a world-famous architect... It should be quite well done.

Oh wow. Where did that come from?!? Looks like it is pretty substantial. Kind of hard to get a good view of the size from the renderings. With this and the library reno going at the same time, we are getting a substantial upgrade on the city's cultural venues. Much needed to sustain our growth!

Hard to believe they need two tower cranes for a low-rise addition. I guess they know what they're doing.

It is wonderful seeing the yellow cranes rise up out of the treeline. While driving along Forest Park has been nice seeing the progress along the Zoo parking lot (moving the iconic "ZOO" signage statue and simple repaving work), having the Art Museum work now visible out of the woods really is impressive. Not only as just a visual, the psychological connotation of progress in the City, from within what may be the emotional heart of the Metro Area for the City, could instill much more faith in StL's renaissance for all who drive by, from the regular commuter to the family driving in to see a Cardinals game. While I'm not going to try taking pictures while driving to and from work, it really is a powerful visage on the highway.

For once, I wouldn't mind seeing the actual construction take its time.

I will take a shot at it, we have the following projects already started or announced around or next to the city this year.

Mississippi River Bridge - 260 million
Shriners Hospital - 160 million
Art Museum Expansion - 120 million
Park Pacific - 105 million
Library - 50 million
The Laural - 50 million
Wash U - 30 million on next Engineering Bldg
Coca Cola Sryup - 25 million

Does the city have a shot at a billion dollars of construction starting in 2010 after a miserable 2009? Could it happen if I didn't include MRB?

We are definitely getting close. Add in these:

New BJC Headquarters on FP Avenue - $75 million
New Data Center at WU's Genome Center - $14 million
Former City Hospital Renovations by Gilded Age - $22 million
St. Louis Centre - $37.5 million
Correction: City Library Renovation - $79 million (not $50M)

That puts us at $977.5 million that is either under construction or announced for 2010. $1 billion here we come!

A billion in development in this economic climate is amazing for a city the size of St. Louis. The city will definitely be on the upswing when the economy rebounds.

I would be shocked if it was only 30. You barely have stone up for 10.

Are you all talking about Brauer Hall which is finishing up construction at the corner of Forest Park Parkway and Skinker? Or have they announced another Engineering building?

^ There's another one on the way, facing Skinker and connected to Brauer, hence the unfinished wall of Brauer facing east.

If planned construction in the City is really approaching $1 billion, and this forum is the first place to notice that, we should really bring that to the attention of the larger world. Perhaps a Post article, or at least just spreading it around the blogosphere. Headlines like that create the perception of vitality, and perception is everything.

In other words, let's turn our posts into real world actions.

I should have added the fact that you also got the Breaux Arts building in Grand Center, thats another 20-25 million if not mistaken. Hopefully KWMU can break ground as well as the Kiel Opera House downtown.

The Art Museum headlining that many cultural and educational institutions breaking ground on expansions or improvements for one city in the same year would be worthy of a NY Times article.

urbanSTL needs a press agent - a few well-times press releases sent to the various media outlets local/national, urbanism groups, etc. would be awesome. Wouldn't take much for someone to do. That said, someone with some experience would need to step up and do it.

I have about $150-200,000 in construction started on my house.

Matt's House: 0.2 million

We need to split this into another thread and keep a running total for every year.
