Not sure where to put this, because a location hasn't been selected yet. A group is planning to build a theme park designed for children and adults with a variety of special needs.

"...a uniquely focused entertainment and amusement park designed specifically for people with physical, mental and intellectual disabilities as well as special needs from the ground up. The destination will have rides, attractions, a greenhouse, gardens, amphitheater sensory areas, a splash park and an ice rink with access designed for everyone in tennis shoes to wheelchairs."

FYI-//Just today, I discovered someone I work with is on the board of this project. It’s still in the works, I got an insight into the logistic travails (obtaining acreage, etc) but still committed to making this happen.

^It's a really neat idea and I hope they can make it happen.

It's not going to help end western sprawl, but I do think that this sounds like a great tourism opportunity for the region.

I think this and the emerging plans for wine in Augusta will both be big wins for St. Charles.

The “hyper inclusive theme park with not a single POC on the board of directors or board of advisors.

Would have liked to see it closer to the core of the region, but I guess it's a good attraction to have.

It's a theme park that will require a lot of parking (more than what might usually be necessary to provide additional ADA accessible spaces) - not sure it would be a good use of any available open land in the region's core.  I'm just happy that there will be a local option for anyone with with disabilities and their friends/family.

^Yeah it looks like the only other park of it's kind in the US is Morgan's Wonderland near San Antonio. It's closer in to the core (17 mins from downtown SA) but it's also only 23 acres while Spirit of Discovery will be about 60 acres.

A big win for our region to have this!

I helped design their pitch deck and other fundraising materials, so I’ve a little insight. Aside from acreage and parking they needed to be within a couple miles (or less) of a full-service hospital with 24/7 ER. The Venn diagram is really tight. And I know this was not their first choice but with their criteria, I’m amazed they found land. Also, a newer part of town means more structures (hotels and restaurants) are ADA compliant making it easier on families. Traveling is difficult and hard for those with special needs.

^Neat to hear you're on board with this. I've been following them on Facebook for a while. It's an interesting organization and I wish them the best luck.

It’s not dead. There’s been some setbacks that I’m probably not at liberty to say and I don’t know the whole story anyway.
