I met Tom Niemeier of SPACE Architects a while ago and figured we should do an interview for the Urban Workshop blog now that it's official that his firm is moving to The Grove (they closed on the property Wednesday). Check out the interview here: http://www.stlurbanworkshop.com/2009/08 ... space.html

Apparently the Grove is the reality TV neighborhood of St. Louis. First Sweetie Pie's got a show on Oprah's network, now it looks like SPACE will be featured on one.

Some tweets from SPACE's twitter feed:
A "major cable network" will be filming our firm for a reality based show. Production starts in January. Crazy.
Waiting for a Skype call from the Casting Director. What have I gotten myself into?
Finished Skype call. Everything went well with Casting Director. Selection process underway. They are looking for "feel good" story. We fit.
They do great work, and I'm excited to see them get this kind of recognition. Anyone have any more info?

I'm going to assume it is either HGTV, DIY, or whatever network currently produces "Flipping Out."

Cool to see StL getting more TV time!

Should definitely be cool - and should put STL in a good light. The more SPACE projects that can be put in front of a national audience the better.

Will the popularity of Sweetie Pies and Space also becoming available for a national viewing, does anyone thing that this may help speed up some development in the Grove?

Maybe not next year or so but maybe in 2-3 years. People have to see how much business Sweetie Pies does and the variety of bars located near Manchester. Also the proximity to CWE, Forest Park and other great neighborhoods. Proposed Drury Hotel to the North, Chouteau and Taylor proposal, Shriners and the new park being constructed. Maybe Im just being too optimistic.

^ No, you're right. There remains a lot of potential. I'd only add that as an FPSE resident from 2006-2011, that same spike in development seemed imminent five years ago. I know, I know, world financial market collapse, yadda, yadda, yadda - I know that's a factor, but for two years now people have been saying that "when" the economy bounces back we'll see big development in FPSE. My guess, slowly, slowly things will get done. The grading of the park is happening now, but the playground and other amenities will take years, the Drury Hotel seems to still be in the works, but may take five years or more. The huge Commerce Bank site development is years away. The Boyle (Sarah?) MetroLink stop at the east end of the neighborhood is at least a couple years away... Who knows.

The Grove will likely become one of the most popular neighborhoods in the Midwest with all of this exposure. My mother teaches for Everest University in Florida and one of her students asked her if she knew Sweet Pie? lol The exposure for the city is great and OWN depicts St. Louis in a very positive and urban light.

I really don't mind posting nextSTL blog articles here - I guess they're not always easy to find in the (limited) search bar we currently have installed, but there's a lot on the blog...

Anyway - it's dated, but here's the latest: http://nextstl.com/central-corridor/dru ... ury-hotels

^ wow, that's a tough site plan. btw, are there any plans for the huge parcel to the west of the new park, where the Laclede Gas building is? That seems prime for something.

but back to Space, I see a tweet that the reality show may not be happening.

There's an old blurb about it on the 17th ward website.

As far as I know this project has been shelved and nothing is currently planned. Hopefully the delay will allow reconsideration of the bland architecture proposed. Having something modern and dynamic at the entrance to the neighborhood from the med school would make the neighborhood architecture more varied and interesting.

Hopefully their old building in the Grove can be repurposed as a restaurant/retail

yeah Ebersoldt moved in from downtown (the slow westward march continues). Now what will happen to Ebersoldt's old space at 1214 Washington? They own the building, including the apartments above. It's a nice 2 story office space and would be easiest to just leave it as such. Not sure if they could find a retail tenant for the first floor and potentially convert the 2nd floor to apartments. Haven't heard anything about the building being sold but that's a possibility too.

I asked Vincent either earlier this year or last year when they announced their move, he said while he had no specific examples of a employee ever being a victim of a crime, they had bad feelings about a block and a half walk to their garage at Park Pacific.....

The Park Pacific area is where the open air drug parties go on all day and night right?
