It looks like SLU wants to permanently close parts of Laclede Ave west of Grand and east of Spring. Their purpose, according to the article is to “increase pedestrian safety and function as a service corridor.”

With the increased attention and traffic the area is getting with the re-development opportunities surrounding IKEA, the spread east of Cortex, and the already rapidly developing and improving stretch between SLU and the CWE, reducing and impeding transportation connections in this area is absolutely the wrong thing for this area. That is, unless SLU wants to further isolate itself from the surrounding city.

While it's obvious that having clear street grid access is important for allowing further commercial growth in Midtown, it's also simply important for managing traffic. With the traffic challenges that area is going to face over the next 12 to 18 months with the addition of Ikea, further construction and growth ofCortex, and the re-routing of traffic onto Vandeventer from the Kingshighway viaduct project, further street closures and re-routings are going to make it even worse.

It looks like the bill from Marlene Davis that proposes this street closure is on hold til the Board re-opens in September. Please. in between now and then, contact Marlene Davis, members of the BoA Streets Committee, and SLU to show your opposition to this idea and why.

In semi-related news, St. Peters church recently asked to close Jefferson in downtown Kirkwood. Jefferson separates St. Peters church from their school.
