I am Starting a grass-root movement to find ways to fund the rebuilding of the sidewalks in the city of St. Louis By using community and neighborhood support and input we hope to figure out ways to pay for the rebuilding of city sidewalks and to enhance the pedestrian experience in St. Louis.

This is the start the grassroots movement I been talking about on other topics and I will be adding more to the page in coming days.

Excellent.

The devil is in the details. It is great what a fixed sidewalk, street sign, etc can do for the look of a street and neighborhood.

The city has a program to repair sidewalks - the 50/50 sidewalk repair program.

The property owner pays 1/2, the city pays the other half.

In some cases, the city will work with you on the 50% if you're really in need (elderly folks for example). Usually this comes from ward money and is doled out by the alderman.

You don't have to be "really in need". There are no income restrictions for the city's 50/50 sidewalk repair program. I believe it is technically operated through the street department.

Regardless, what matters is whether your ward has such a program. It requires aldermanic cooperation. If so, there is generally a 1-2 year waiting list.

Generally speaking, it costs $2000 - $3000 to replace the sidewalk in front of a home in the city, so the 50/50 program cuts the homeowner's share in half. If you live on a corner and have your house wrapped by sidewalks on two sides, your costs go up.

General question: It's a good idea, starting a program to improve sidewalks in the city. But are some of you learning about the 50/50 program for the first time here at UrbanSTL?

If so, you need to get more engaged with your city, your ward, and your neighborhood! :)

Or they will do the work and send you a bill for half with a letter thanking you for being part of the 50/50 program and when you call them and ask for proof that you said you want to be part of the program they put you on hold and comeback and say "oh I guess you checked the not at this time box"
Oh and the bill included 50sq ft of sidewalk across the street from my parents house....

Most people aren't aware that the city ambulance will send you a $500-700 bill for taking you to the hospital

Yes, this city really does need more ground up movements! I'd really like to see more projects like this initiated by residents.

In my opinion we have a decent top down approach compared to other cities I've lived but lack a bottom up approach.

Great idea and keep at it
