Hi I am thinking of getting a place on the 3600 block of mcree ave and the 4000 block of shaw blvd. can some one tell me how the area is in regards to safety and public transportation?
I don't know much about the area, but Walkscore.com can give you a rough idea of the walkability of an address. It's not a perfect substitute for local knowledge, but it's a start.

3600 Mcree is probably walkable (although a bit of a hike) to the Grand Metro station. I believe a bus line runs down Shaw, but I have no idea where it takes you or how often it runs. Either place, I would not expect people to rely on public transportation for their daily needs -- cars and/or bikes would generally be a better option.joshu23 wrote:Hi I am thinking of getting a place on the 3600 block of mcree ave and the 4000 block of shaw blvd. can some one tell me how the area is in regards to safety and public transportation?
I'd rate the 4000 Shaw location as the safer alternative. Neither location is particularly bad or good. As for general coolness, Shaw has some attraction, but frankly, unless the price couldn't be beat, there's several other City neighborhoods I'd consider (especially if you don't want to rely on a car to serve your daily needs -- grocery shopping, commuting to work/school, hitting the bar, etc.).

Not sure about the 3600 block of McRee. It looks to be pretty much stuck between SLU Hospital and I-44 - you can walk it but there's not many places to go. Used to be fairly dodgy, but I'd think it's better since they cleaned out McRee Town.
There is a nice wine bar on the 4000 block of Shaw, a couple of small corner stores not far from there, and some stuff if you hike out to Grand. Also, there's a bus line that runs along Shaw Ave., I believe. But otherwise, the neighborhood leaves something to be desired as far as walkable amenities.
Unless there's a particular reason you want to be right there (work at SLU Hospital?) you could do better, in, say, Tower Grove South. It's like Shaw, but with more going on.

The bus that runs down Shaw is the 59. It goes from Brentwood, hits Shaw, Russell, 13th St. in Soulard and on up to the 14th Street hub. Its really a good line to hop on to get downtown or Soulard, and is never crowded. Not sure about the route farther west. I'm sure it hits some shopping centers though.

The 59 does not run through Shaw. Things changed this past year, new signs are coming.
I live, walk, bike, and bus more or less where you're looking. I do not own a car, nor do I need one.
The 14 goes up and down Tower Grove Ave and connects the CWE to the Hill along Shaw in front of MoBot. That's a good MetroLink feeder. The 80 runs along Shaw and Tower Grove Avenue and will get you to Lafayette Square and downtown. It also goes along Park Ave near the McRee address. The 8 bates goes all kinds of crazy places, including shaw. Either of the addresses you suggested put you in good biking range of the Grove, which is a great place to bike, and there's a bus from there to downtown or maplewood.
Obviously being close to grand would give you access to the 70 Grand which is the best bus in town by frequency. It'll take you to South Grand, the MetroLink, Grand Center, etc.
You're looking at a great area with great buses and easy biking. Shaw, Tower Grove Ave, and Russell on the other side of Grand are Bike St. Louis routes.
