The builders and the brass kick off Scott base housing project

By Doug Moore

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

06/27/2006

exerpt: The $254 million project will entail building 608 houses, demolishing 445 and renovating or modernizing 932 others. More than half of the new houses - 386 - will be built on the 145 acres that once served as a cornfield and where Hannah and others ceremonially shoveled dirt Tuesday.

Sounds like some of this will be visible from I-64. It'll fill in some of the corn fields and help 'build out' the area. Between that and the lane widening on 64, it's go to see the metro east come alive.

Personally, I wish the freeway enhancements ran all the way to Scott/Mid-America but who has that kind of $$$?

Sounds good for the military employees and their families. :)

Although it is typical suburban design, it looks like the new housing at SAFB is coming along nicely.

Typical suburban, but it's an army base. I wouldn't suspect they are too worried about being urban ;)

Wasn't just like 10-15 years ago or so that we were worried about Scott closing? Like, seriously worried?

Oh yeah, then we built that airport, and now we no longer worry about Scott closing. In fact, now we are expanding.

Mission accomplished.

You should see the old housing in Scott. It's actually pretty nice, like a lot of old military housing. New buildings, houses, and so forth, on military bases, are typically very ugly.

I agree. There are parts of Scott that are really surprisingly nice. Lots of brick in some places.
