That video was, in fact, the best thing since popcorn. Dude - the power structure in this town is really bogging us down.

FWIW, that stretch of Salisbury is arguably the brightest spot in all of Hyde Park. There is a restaurant called the Cornerstone Cafe that sits along this stretch, adding to the positivity. It is weird seeing brand new street lights and sidewalks in front of the Nord St. Louis Turnverein tho.
Why wasn't Elliot Davis all over Craig Schmid and Ken Ortmann? Or Jennifer Florida? Cherokee and Grand recieved federal funding for their streetscape improvments.
I watched it with an open mind. I couldn't make it half way through.
First, the project's done. The Feds moves at such a snail's pace that money was probably applied for and processed a year or two ago if not more. The city's construction bidding and process takes years too. This is not relevant to the current situation.
Also, infrastructure investment almost always leads to private investment. If I were a business looking to expand, open new or relocate (from that area) I'd reconsider the area. If the city is taking a neighborhood seriously with that kind of reinvestment then others may follow.
When I was unemployed a few years ago, I flew to Columbus, Ohio for job interviews. According to Elliot Davis, I was broke, cutting back spending, needing to feed my kids, I couldn't afford some 'fancy plane ticket' to Columbus.
What a joke!

It was a stimulus funded project, meant to keep people working. The improved infrastructure probably would not have been funded without the ARRA. Hyde Park and North City as a whole could use a lot more than $2 million in infrastructure, whatever the source.

$2 million would have put up several building to fill in those gaps.
Also, why on earth are the last few bricks of the Turner Hall still being left up?

Visited the Cornerstone Cafe and had the meatloaf special with a baked potato with both butter and sour cream, green beans, coffee, french bread and butter. What a delight! Both the staff and the other customers are all nice; there is a wonderful view of Hyde Park and the classic fire station. Plenty of automobile activity being so close to Highway 70 and the McKinley Bridge. Me? Easy to get to from center-city via Vandaventer to Natural Bridge right to Salisbury. The large building right across the street has classic brickwork and looks ripe for renovation.

I second the praise for Cornerstone...it's a great little neighborhood joint.
And that building across the street with great brick work (1435 Salisbury) is currently undergoing interior demolition for a full rehab.

While the work in Hyde Park is great to see and want to see more of it, a not-for-profit group with a mission to provide a suburban like community in St. Louis worries me a bit.

Someone who patronized the Amaco on Salisbury is now a millionaire.

Not a street improvement, but definitely an improvement to the street http://stlnabedev.tumblr.com/post/43485 ... tored-1435
That's great to see. I remember seeing that building while attending the Open/Closed event up there two years ago and worrying that it would be lost.
