Didn’t see a Rolla thread anywhere...but St. Louis Public Radio reports they are about to start on a large campus improvement project.  Will include new construction, academic buildings, sport facilities, rehabs of existing campus buildings, mixed use private developments and a new research/tech business park on the opposite side of 44.  Will be connected by a new highway exit and pedestrian bridge over the interstate.

Dark orange is new construction, light orange is renovations, and striped is mixed use.

Looks great, but where are they gonna get the money for it?

I'd rather they focus on pushing campus south and east than constructing so much new sprawl across 44.

This plan appears to call for the destruction of about 50 houses between University Drive and 10th Street.

It's probably wrong to think this but that's probably the funds for the failed Clayton project. Good to see that he is investing into the school system though

Wow. Incredible. That's a transformative gift.

Missouri S&T's current endowment is right around $200 million.

Would be great to see S&T become a stakeholder in Cortex with this new entrepreneurship initiative.

The four projects listed there are a bit of a modest first step I think, with the geothermal plant the only one that seems exciting at all. Spending nearly 10 million on "arrival plazas" appears to be putting lipstick on a pig.

"gathering places for people visiting campus"

What drives this perpetual need - not only with this project but every other bloated open space - for "gathering"? I've never wanted to visit a college campus and "gather." I've never wanted to visit a fire station, city hall, or library and "gather" in a huge, wasteful atrium. Is this some term that architects use and condition people to think is something truly necessary?

^ i'm guessing it's driven more by boards of trustees—which have become infested with wealthy capitalists—than by architects. they need lots of useless spaces to put donors' names on. and for Startbucks. colleges and universities are now run as resorts for the children of the wealthy. instead of a mint on your pillow you get a business degree.

Missouri won big today when it came to the federal government's Tech Hub Program, both Kansas City and Rolla/South Central Missouri were designated tech hubs today. For Rolla, it will be for critical mineral processing.
Lead Agency: University of Missouri Systems
State Served: Missouri
Applicant-Defined Region: Farmington; Rolla; and West Plains μSAs; Carter; Crawford; Dent; Iron; Madison; Oregon; Reynolds; Shannone; St. Genevieve; Texas and Washington Counties
Core Technology Area: critical mineral processing
The Critical Minerals and Materials for Advanced Energy (CM2AE) Tech Hub, led by the University of Missouri System, aims to position south-central Missouri as a global leader in critical minerals processing to provide the materials needed to support battery technology. This Tech Hub will build on the region’s mineral rich geography, expertise in hydrometallurgical refining, and existing assets to increase processing capacity to convert minerals into materials necessary for advanced energy and critical goods, including lithium-ion and primary-lead-acid batteries. In doing so, CM2AE seeks to meet the demand of U.S. advanced energy manufacturers and reduce dependence on foreign critical minerals while creating thousands of good paying jobs.
