Occupancy permit has been requested for a gym/fitness center (suite A) in the Lofts building. Am I right to assume this is one of the long-neglected retail spaces?

PostAug 31, 2013#28

Building permit applied for this week for $500,000 in exterior renovations ("exterior alterations per plans / around building"). I would assume these are retail storefront renovations.

Hopefully this will include taking down and replacing the ROBERTS TOWERS sign.

I liked the sign, I didn't like that it was lazily named the 'Roberts Tower' like everything else the Roberts owned—Roberts Lofts, Roberts Plaza, Roberts Banana Stand...

It's cool looking lettering. Any alteration to the sign should absolutely be a replacement, not straight up removal.

Just rearrange the letters. Lots of possibilities. I'll space you most of the three and four word ones.

The Beer Rots Wort Tower. Has a nice ring to it.

^ You missed what could quite possibly be the laziest rename of a building EVER

ROBERTS TOWER
R RT TOWER
RESORT TOWER

Only 4 letters moved and drop the B. Might be cheaper than rem, oving the whole sign let alone replacing it. Kind of an uninspiring name though. If you want throw another word in the middle somewhere.

RESORT (insert word) TOWER or (insert word) RESORT TOWER

With some black paint, you could turn the last R into a question mark, then you get either SOW TOE? or TWO BEERS?

Edit: this reminds me of when I was at SEMO and Neal Boyd was running for SG president and he put NEAL E BOYD placard letters on the band practice field, and one night someone went out there and rearranged it into BONY DEAL

All: I believe this is not for the tower, but for the lofts at the old Board of Education building.
See address in heading.
Agree that the Tower building's naming has got to go with its renovation.

I led y'all astray down a very hilarious rabbit trail.
Sorry 'bout that.

But see how easily we all got confused on which Roberts project this is?

Did the new owners propose a new name for it yet? I remember someone calling it the OPO Tower at some point. Is that really what they plan to call it? If so, they can change the sign to that then.

Good! they half assed the store front when they renovated it in 2005, probably why they have not been able to attract any tenants to the retail

In addition to the $500,000 in exterior renovations, there has been new permit activity in the past week week for interior renovations to the first floor. It sounds like the new owners are focused on leasing the street level retail in the former Board of Education building.

Post-Dispatch reports that the black Vitrolite panels removed from the storefronts is on its way to Hoover Dam. The men's restroom atop the dam is an art deco classic (and part of a National Historic Landmark). Tim Dunn of Maplewood will lead the project.

wow, wish we would stop exporting our architectural heritage (first bricks and now Vitriolite) elsewhere and maybe take some pride in it here.

Michael Calhoun's piece mentions that they're considering putting additional apartments in the first floor retail spaces.

That's pretty disappointing but I understand their thinking in a weak retail environment. I suppose the good news if they choose this route is a few more residents and better prospects for the multitude of other landlords trying to lure retail.

What if Roberts and Arcade BOTH f-ck up and put apartments on the ground level...?

These developers are stupid. They are straight-up stupid. I just want to write a personal, hand-written letter to be delivered to the homes of everyone responsible for these decisions that just says "You're an idiot."

You can't fix stupid.

Of all the places in downtown, sure, let's forget about first-floor retail around the Old Post Office.

Dumbest. Move. Ever.

(Okay, maybe not the dumbest. A lot of mistakes have been made in downtown. This still ranks high, however.)
