RIP Steve. I really enjoyed your perspective and your dedication to making this city better. I'm glad we got to chat briefly via email a couple years back. You will be missed.

I'm very sorry to share that our dear friend Steve passed away this morning. I know that he was overwhelmed with gratitude and appreciation for the support you have all shown in this fundraiser, and it gave him peace of mind to know David would not face an overwhelming financial situation alone. Thank you so much for stepping up to help.

Physical therapy took me down to the gym yesterday Did some leg exercises and walked around obstacles. I did the walk with the weight still around my right ankle — she forgot to take it off. Too busy to get a photo of the gym.

My room at the rehab facility is right next to our light rail line — I can hear every train speed by. Very cool.
Physical therapy evaluated me this morning, occupational therapy is returning to evaluate me shortly.
I found Steve's blog in 2013 well before I knew about this forum or NextSTL. When I was just getting into walkability (and urban accessibility!!!) and urbanism, for all I knew, he was the only person in St. Louis that cared about these things. Through cycling volunteering, I've been fortunate to meet people with varying disabilities. Witnessing them dealing with paratransit services really shows how much car dependency rules our lives. And while I can walk for a couple miles or bike for several, many cannot.
Steve lived down the street from me in the Printers lofts and my wife provided him physical therapy for a stretch. His perspectives were so important and valuable in identifying challenges in our built environment and using his platform to drive change for the better. He will be missed.
Steve and Robert Powers (of Built St. Louis) made me fall in love with St. Louis's built environment when I moved home after college. End of an era... very sad to have lost him.
