I didn't really want to create a new thread for this, but after a little searching I'm not really sure where else to put it.

The Business Journal had some interesting data regarding retail in Chesterfield (with some graphs comparing it to the rest of the region).
Has Chesterfield lost its label as our region's shopping mecca?

The west St. Louis County city once reported the lowest retail vacancy rate in the region at just 1.8%. Five years later, vacancy has grown more than 144%, to 4.4% in the third quarter of 2019, according to the latest available data from Newmark Grubb Zimmer. Its average asking price for rent grew just 1.91%.  Meanwhile, mid-St. Louis County saw its vacancy rate fall nearly 40% over the same period and its average lease rate jump 15.08%.  But the third-quarter data comparing 2019 with 2014 from Newmark Grubb Zimmer shows what's likely "course correction" rather than definitive proof shoppers are changing their habits.

Nearly 94% of all retail space in Chesterfield is categorized as big box space (businesses occupying more than 9,001 square feet), whereas approximately 84% of midcounty's supply is big box stores.  Chesterfield's vacancy rate for big box space jumped 170.59% in the five-year period, the most of any submarket in the region.  Chesterfield was once home to two outlet malls (one is now being redeveloped) and also has one of the largest nearly empty malls in St. Louis — all of which has packed a punch on Chesterfield's vacancy rate.  Overall, every submarket in St. Louis saw demand for retail space fall compared with the amount of space available to lease over the five-year period, again suggesting that market forces are still course correcting.
There are some pretty interesting graphs, but I'm at work and access to my image upload site is blocked here.

Between Chesterfield Mall and Taubman Outlet that is likely accurate.
I think the increase in vacancy has more to do with the death of malls and increase in online shopping. Not to mention the Taubman Outlet should have never been built with the STL Premium Outlet going in at the same time. That was doomed from the start. STL Prem. has better stores and a far superior layout. I think Taubman has a better location, but clearly that didn’t make a difference.

Completely agree.  We have played musical chairs with outlet malls (Beltz?, Warrenton, St. Louis Mills and then these two) and in reality we have gained nothing but moved which municipality gets the sales tax.   These municipalities need to learn from this.

^Good riddance to the lot of them if you asked me. There's no reason anything there should ever have been a flood controlled and tax subsidized shopping destination for anyone but ducks.

"vacancy has grown more than 144%, to 4.4%"

possibly the stupidest thing ever written.

If they had to build both malls, they should have built them next to one another.  There are two outlet malls in San Marcos, Tx.  San Marcos Premium and Tanger Outlets are adjacent to one another along I-35 and, combined, they have well over 300 stores.  The two malls together create a premiere tourist destination for South Texas.  I've shopped there a few times and on holiday weekends you have to book a hotel in Austin or San Antonio then drive because area hotels are booked.  Good luck finding a place to park.

While St. Louis/Chesterfield wouldn't need/support a development with 300+ stores, two combined outlet malls would have been a much bigger draw than two competing malls on opposite sides of I-64.

That last sentence is a metaphor for all of St. Louis

I definitely agree with this, seems like there are much better metrics that could be reported such as the total retail square footage occupied, which with the closure of Chestefield Mall has to have plummeted.

Not that I expect much, but does anyone know if there has been any movement on the former JC Penney space in Hampton Village? Seems ridiculous that Schnucks pushed them out without a tenant lined up.

Chesterfield must share its sales tax revenue with other cities, Missouri's high court says

Looks like Chesterfield finally lost a fight they've apparently been fighting since their incorporation.  Good.

I suppose this probably fits here too.

Strange Donuts owner to buy World's Fair Donuts

So now he's working on a few minor updates to get the building ready. When it's good to go, World's Fair Donuts will be back with the same coffee, doughnuts and fritters it has served since 1974. The only thing Bockman and the Clantons have considered adding: a vegan option. "I think it would be good for that neighborhood."
