An idea to ruminate upon... The United States with only 38 states, a proposed realignment from the 1970s meant to place large cities at the heads of their own states while lessening the total number of states, pursuing increased efficiencies in government. This idea was proposed by Prof. George Pearcy of California State University. It'd never happen, but it's an interesting thought exercise.

Interesting map. This seems like a method of potentially reducing the power of cities like KC and STL in their states, though.
