This is a good idea in theory, but paying 10 bucks for entry and charging 600 bucks for vendors = Total Flop.

So stupid.
I forgot to post about this.
This is not a slogan for STL, it is an event at Americas Center. Holiday magic is this weekend.
I know. It's still stupid.

Just came from there, and it is actually pretty fantastic. There are a lot of animal exhibits, shows for kids, a constant rotation of holiday music (school choirs and that sort of thing), a pretty cool hourly light show, big carnival rides and lots of food. I can't imagine folks going there with kids and not having a good time.
Oh, and you can go to any Schnucks and get a $2 off coupon to help reduce the cost. Or you can go here and print the coupon out, if you'd rather:

I have to say, I was very skeptical but it really is done very well.

Great to hear. I may try to bring the family down for this on Sunday.
Could end up being a nice holiday tradition, especially if they can tie it in with other events downtown. Would be nice if this event, the lighting of the tree, and the Macy's events were all occurring at the same time.

Perhaps i am wrong. I might check it out after the above responses.

Just got back from Holiday Magic and had a fun time - lots of good stuff for the kiddos there. Definitely more of a family event. Plenty of free rides for the kids, a pet parade and dog show and other features. Our little one really seemed to enjoy it.
There's no reason St. Louis couldn't become known as the gay mecca of the Midwest-- we just aren't very good at marketing ourselves or feeling confident in making such a claim. Let's step up, peeps!
We should step it up!

You know, I didn't even know Maggiano's was a chain. So this is even more embarrassing. The wife and I aren't really big into Italian food, but I cannot imagine why anyone would go to a chain in Brentwood when they can get authentic Italian 5 miles away.

Did anyone else make it to Holiday Magic?
We were there early, and the crowd was pretty good. It was really picking up when we left around noon or so.

^ We thought about attending Saturday afternoon, but our guy was pretty tired after waking up very early and attending Breakfast with Santa at Macy's. I wasn't sure whether there would be enough there to hold his interest, but after reading your comments here and on FB, now I wish we would've given it a try!
Hopefully it's something they'll offer next year. And it seems like a prime day for Macy's and other downtown merchants and restaurants to make a full-court press to get people downtown!

Wow, good to hear there is actually TOO MUCH stuff for folks to do downtown this holiday season to pack it into one day.
I really don't think anyone could have made that claim Christmastime in 1997

I was thinking about some things that make St. Louis unique compared to comparable size Midwest cities (outside of Chicago) for attracting visitors, conventions, etc. One thing we have that KC, Indy, Nashville, and Milwaukee don't seem to have are a lot of unique things to ride. After the St Lou IS, campaign runs out, I'd like to see a RIDE ST. LOUIS campaign. Here is a short list of unique thngs you can ride in this town:
Some cities have some of these, but not all.
1. The Arch
2. The River (River rides)
3. Light Rail
4. Ferry Boats
5. Grant's Farm
Are there still Helo rides downtown?
Most cities have some of these, so I didn't list them:
AMTRAK
Zoo train
Roller Coasters
Horse Drawn Carriages (why don't they use Clydesdales?)
Bicycle Trails
Hot Air Balloons
Segway Tours
I'm not that intrigued when another city add campaign shows people on a Hot Air Balloon, Carriage, or Bicycles, since all cities have those.
But the Arch tram is unique. Most people in the country don't even know that you can go up into the Arch. Not every city has a World's Greatest River to ride on. Not many cities in the Midwest have Light Rail, outside of Chicago. From St. Louis, a great day trip is the Golden Eagle Ferry/Illinois Free Ferry, Pierre Marquette Park, and Great River Road drive. Not many cities have real working ferry boats so close. I listed Grants Farm because the ride through the park ending at the Barnhauf is rather unique.
Are there other rides we have that you don't find other places we could add to the "Ride St. Louis" add campaign?

RCGA topper Dick Fleming will win the award for the most hours of sleep logged during meetings in China this past week. His bemused companions note that the nodding Fleming (and St. Louis County official Mike Jones, who apparently slept more before he arrived) joined the group a day or
two late and was having difficulty adjusting to a 13 hour time zone differential. When he is awake, Fleming is a solid advocate for St. Louis.
