I was unsure whether this belongs in South St. Louis or Downtown.
ST. LOUIS • A fire gutted a one-story building connected to the former St. Mary's Infirmary on Wednesday night at 1536 Papin Street, authorities said.

The three-alarm fire started about 11:15 p.m. and drew some 70 firefighters to stop the blaze from spreading to the main five-story brick building on the site, said Capt. Dan Sutter of the St. Louis Fire Department.

Sutter said the building was vacant and that no one was injured while putting out the fire. Firefighters had the blaze under control by about 12:30 a.m.

"The concern was that the fire would spread to the adjoining buildings," Sutter said.

Sutter said the department doesn't know the cause and may never determine what sparked it because of the extensive damage.

In 2009, the Landmarks Association of St. Louis put St. Mary's on its list of the city's most endangered structures. It was built in the 1880s.

I believe this is the small building that burned up

I realize it was an adjacent building and not the main structure, but it's still sad to see the infirmary in the shape it's in. I don't think it'll be around a lot longer.

Another fire. I hope this building survives long enough to be rehabbed: http://www.kmov.com/story/29425675/fire ... t-building

Emergency demo permit issued

"If a developer is out there, now is the time to come forward," Slay said in a statement. "The City will work through any and all proposals that may come forward until the demolition date has arrived to restore public safety to the immediate area."

Much like that whole stretch of Chouteau, this will be an empty lot for a very long time due to its not so great location and the proximity to Clinton-Peabody.

That's going be huge pile of bricks when it falls.

Anyone know what they do with the railings, metal stairs, fire escapes? Do they try to salvage anything on these demolitions inside or out? Auction?

Built in 1877 and on the NHR. I really hope someone steps up to re-purpose this handsome building.

I thought about trying to do some crowd sourcing to save it (it seems important enough that it could grab some attention and donors), but from pics I have seen of the inside there isn't much hope. A 500k purchase, stabilization, and light renovation, at the least. An experienced developer would need to take the lead.

This building deserves to be saved.

I went up to the roof of this building about two years ago and it was pretty scary. The whole place is open to the elements and the decay is serious. This will be a major major restoration project but I hope someone takes it on.
