Panera says company will stay in St. Louis

St. Louis Business Journal

Monday, October 29, 2007

Panera Bread Co. says its new headquarters will be based in the St. Louis area.

Panera is looking for 80,000 square feet of office space with room for additional growth. The company's headquarters is currently split between offices at 6710 Clayton Road in Richmond Heights and 1600 S. Brentwood in Brentwood.

In an article in the Oct. 29 print edition of the Business Journal, sources said Panera is looking both in St. Louis and in Boston, where many of its top executives are based.

In a statement released Oct. 27, Panera said it is searching for space in the St. Louis area to combine its current office locations in Richmond Heights and Brentwood into one location. "Panera Bread plans to continue its 20-year presence in St. Louis and looks forward to growing both its St. Louis and Boston-area offices as they continue to expand," according to the statement.

Panera Bread (Nasdaq: PNRA) owns and franchises more than 1,100 bakery-cafes under the names Panera Bread and Saint Louis Bread Co.

That's exactly what I had.

Serious question: are admins the only one that can post whole articles? (As Mel Brooks said in History of the World Part 1: "It's good to be the king.")

question..how far does the name "St louis Bread Company" go from the STL metro? In other words, does it goes as far as (West) Columbia, (East) Ofallon, Ill., South ? and North ? and why did they change the name from STL Bread Co. to Panera for the rest of the country?

I'm assuming that is the whole article. To answer your question, no one should be posting whole articles. [-X

This news warms the cockles of my heart. This, and hearing that Jay Leno will finally be retiring in 2009.

^^ Yeah, right. ABC and Fox are already wanting him, because Leno has decided he's not ready to retire. If NBC doesn't give the 10:30 central slot to Conan, they have to pay Conan $40 million. Either way, they risk losing a big late night star. Leno has years left, he's not quitting in 09.

To remain on topic; Panera Bread.

So are there any news on this? Did they figure out where they are going to be located?

Panera is moving more employees to the Center 40 building, officially. I think this is likely a temporary place for them, but they are taking over most of the 7th floor, which my company is moving from. Their reps walked through my office yesterday and confirmed the move. They are actually taking all of our cubes and desks. This tells me that they are not investing much into this office. I know they are known to be cheap with their offices, but they are taking anything and everything my company leaves.

FYI_ Center 40 is the glass building right across from Brentwood Square on Brentwood Blvd. It is right next to the Joseph White building.

I'm a bit surprised they are only looking for 80,000 sq ft. with ~350 employees. Is that fairly typical for a business of that size? It would seem like they would need slightly more space.

A sign outside Panera Bread Co.’s Richmond Heights headquarters says the building’s 59,000 square feet of space is available for lease, but Panera is keeping quiet about its headquarters relocation plans.

The fast-casual restaurant chain began its office search efforts in 2007 but put its decision on hold in the face of a sagging economy. Panera was in talks with Duke Realty at the end of the year to finalize a lease for more than 70,000 square feet of space at Duke’s Laumeier Office Park at Watson and Geyer roads in Sunset Hills. Panera spokeswoman Lynn Parrish said in November that a decision was imminent.

The company is not commenting on the Sunset Hills deal.

CresaPartners Principal Steve Schmid and Vice President Doug Bock are representing Panera in the search.

Panera leased 33,000 square feet of space at its current headquarters at 6710 Clayton Road in Richmond Heights in 2000. When it outgrew that space, Panera began leasing space at 1600 S. Brentwood in Brentwood and has expanded twice in that building since February 2005. It now leases 26,000 square feet of space there. The Richmond Heights and Brentwood leases expire this year.

My sister works at Panera corporate and told me months ago they'd be moving to Sunset Hills--I kinda thought it was public knowledge.

Will they be changing their name to Sunset Hills Bread Company? I doubt it since they were in Brentwood/RH before. Wish Panera was a St. Louis company, right downtown.

^ I think cities should be able to copyright their names. Want to be St. Louis Realty? St. Louis Bread Co.? St. Louis Closet Co.? Then pay up, and oh, it's 10x whatever the rate if the business isn't actually located in St. Louis. Hey, the same could be true in reverse. If I open a "Clayton Crepes" east of Skinker I would pay!

Could have at least changed it to: "Panera, the artist formerly known as St. Louis Bread Company"

I read in the BJ today that City/County locations will retain the St. Louis name.  Anything outside of "St. Louis" will get the Panera branding.

Which does not make sense, given the reasoning they stated for the change in the first place.  How many metro-east/St. Charles/Jefferson county locations had the STLBC moniker?
