I hear that the convent at Our Lady of Sorrows is going to be demolished - is this a historic building? Is anything going in in its place?

Are you serious??? I went to OLS and my 'rents are still active. I haven't heard of this plan. I've heard that the gym might be demolished, but not the convent.
I haven't heard this. It doesn't seem likely, because Sorrows has no money to do something like that. The gym will also not be torn down, because again, money.

^That is the church. Apperently the convent is up the street.
This is kind of surprising. I hadn't heard anything about this. I wonder what they are going to do with the land?

What a suprise this is...can't help to feel sad over the demise of this place. I wonder if there are some structural issues to make a repair/remodel unpractical.

It actually looks similar to the church. They used the same brick and roof tiles only in a building that looks more like a house.
I just talked to my Mom who is a big donor to the capital program. The entire plan includes tearing down the school, gym and convent. The convent apparently has only 2 nuns living in it and the building is in terrible shape. Next is the gym and then the school. In the undetermined future the new school will be where the gym is now and a new gym in between the new school and the church. I guess the recess yard will be behind all the buildings stretching from Khwy west to the new school. My Mom has blueprints so I'm going to try to get her to scan them or something. This is wierd to see my childhood destroyed.

The sale today was great (albeit sad), by the way. I'll post photos to Ecology of Absence tonight.

Yes, good sale. I only wish every building that was going to be demolished in StL set a goal of sending as little as possible to the landfill, as they did. Wow.

Thanks for that link...th photos brought back a bunch of childhood memories. I can't even remember how many times us kids would accidently kick soccer balls at that building from the recess yard and nearly break the windows.
I find it funny that they think,
1 that they need to expand the school
2. that they can afford to expand the school.
They don't have an increasing enrollment. Mary Magdalens merging will not have a large effect, and it will continue to decrease in years to come. It is happening everywhere. There is also another aspect to this. The schools are merging in the true sense of the name. Neither parish will have control, it will be a joint effort to run the new school, including a new name. I doubt Magdelans parishoners would want to have anything to do with this campaign to replace the school. The campaign is already severelly underfunded. My expectations are that the convent will not be demolished, and the school will not be expanded.
The sale was a good idea for a fundraiser though. Much better than throwing those usefull things away.

I stopped by the Pretty War STL website to view his "<A HREF="http://stl.prettywar.com/">Urban Pic of the Day</A>" and found a post dated August 27, 2005 where he had mentioned driving by Our Lady of Sorrows parish that week and seeing that the convent was gone. He posted a series of photos taken the week before.
