I can't believe these groups will condone let alone promote this type of behavior. Violence never solves anything in fact creates more friction and hostility. I hope they rethink what they are saying and what their trying to accomplish. If they want justice this is absolutely the wrong way to go about it.
Violence obviously solves things all the time (ask George Washington), but I think the clergy are advocating disruption rather than violence. Protesting, sit-ins, blockades, stoppages, and all the other usual leftist tactics that worked so well for the MLK Jr.-era civil rights activists.

There's actually nothing wrong with putting racists in timeout.

From an independent view, these potential protestors do not seem to have the numbers to cause mass disruption in St. Louis. From the press conference, there seemed to be only 50 or so people? As much as I support their message, any attempt by them to shut down the St. Louis airport or downtown as a whole will be gravely advised and would be quickly suppressed by police.

I'm tired of idiocy.

I'm tired of people making simple-minded, judgmental presumptions...
This is unreal. The clergy, men of cloth, supporting Ferguson type protests..which I presume means looting and burning of businesses and private property.
and being dumb enough to not see the hypocrisy.

I realize this is still the internet but I always assumed this Forum was a little above calling people "snowflakes."

For a lot of the people who paid attention to what happened in Ferguson, violence and looting is not the first thing that comes to mind. As for halting interstates, the best way I've seen it described "Protests are not supposed to be convenient."

Listen, maybe you aren't a racist but just prone to hurling uninformed, inflammatory comment. These people are clearly saying they will repeat the type of prolonged, direct action protests that were used during Ferguson. Specifics cited include shutting down roads, disrupting a Cardinals game, and the like. While folks of goodwill can debate the appropriateness of these types of civil disobedence/non-violent actions, whether it comes from you, P-D staff or anyone else, it's just pure bullsh*t to claim or presume these activists and clergy are encouraging or support arson, looting or physical violence.

Yeah, I guess being a business owner gives me a different perspective. Again, ask Zisser Tire and the CEO of Quik Trip what comes to mind when they think of Ferguson, and I literally mean Ferguson, not I-44 and Grand Ave, or what happened in the South Grand neighborhood because that was 80% peaceful.

Ferguson to me included the burning of private businesses and MB's dad getting on top of car with a bullhorn yelling, "Burn this schitt down now!"

I won't forget that...sorry.

As for Haversham, he's the smartest man in the room, we all know that.

One of the funniest lines during the Ferguson stuff was an interview KMOV did with the CEO of Quik Trip after his business was burned to the ground. Someone at KMOV asked him if he would rebuild there once the dust settled.

His response: 'Hell No!"

hahahahahaha...

In fact, being a business owner most likely puts me in a much different place than 90% of the regular posters on this board so I should refrain from posting on social issues.

Good luck STL when this judge's verdict is revealed. If he's found guilty, there will be an appeal, mostly based on the statements from those on the courthouse steps the other day.

Talk about irony Haversham!

Shock- auto-oriented development near 270 isn't helping the southeast corner of Ferguson.

12.4 million dollar teen center now open on West Florissant in Ferguson.  I don't think this can be stressed enough how important a development like this is, especially at this point in St. Louis history.  Lawlessness seems to be at an all time high with a large portion of that crime being committed by our youth .  As much as it pains me to say it, the uncomfortable truth is that with fractured homes and disinterested parents, a lot of these children are being left to their own devices to fill the voids in their lives.  They get out of school in the middle of the afternoon while everyone else is at work and even those whose parents are available, they'd rather not be bothered with setting aside their own personal demons long enough to engage the child.  So they have way too much free time and go deeper down the rabbit hole while developing a contemptuous disdain for normal, healthy, civil, interpersonal relationships.  Not having respect for your fellow man/woman can lead to dire consequences the longer that type of behavior goes unchecked.  Kids want to be challenged, they want to learn, they want to be sociable.  It is inherent to their nature.  So having this youth center available with the multitudes of programs and services that they are offering can be a game changer if the model is implemented and duplicated elsewhere.  St. Louis City for one could use several of these facilities.  Unfortunately this is just a start.  This alone will take several years to bear fruit as it will take time for younger children taking advantage of this service to supplant the ones who are already tarnished by societal ills.  But with a renewed focus on our youth as well as, hopefully, better programs for training, jobs and education at a higher level we will be able to become a model for how we can turn the lessons learned since the tragedy of six years ago into a model for community togetherness.

Text from the St. Louis Business Journal
Youth ages 12 to 18 now have a new safe place to go in St. Louis County for education and activities after school and in the summer.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis on Thursday unveiled its new, $12.4 million Teen Center of Excellence, located at 9200 W. Florissant Ave. in Ferguson. Officials said the new center is one of the first of its kind nationwide, which they were led to develop after being encouraged by civic leaders to expand services in neighborhoods that lack youth programming. The new center is in the midst of four school districts and will serve 1,500 youth, according to the nonprofit.
The 26,856-square-foot, three-level Teen Center is scheduled to be open to members in mid-November, officials said. Registration is now open, with membership for ages 12-18 at $25 annually; for more information go here.
It houses a nutrition education center, outdoor garden, gymnasium, intellectual commons, theater, green and drama rooms, fitness zone, gaming room, music and art studio and innovation center, as well as office space.
Officials said programming at the new center will emphasize the following:
  • Health and wellness, through yoga, healthy habits training and open gym;
  • Education and workforce development, with activities including college tours, ACT/SAT prep, tutoring, job readiness, internships and summer employment;
  • STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) via visual and performing arts, coding, app creation and robotics;
  • Leadership and civic engagement, through community service, character programs and advocacy training.
Work began in September 2018 on the facility, with KAI Design & Build serving as the general contractor, Arcturis as project architect, and construction consultant The Striler Group.
The new center is being funded by individual and corporate donors, including Edward Jones, Express Scripts and the St. Louis Community Foundation, officials previously said.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis bought the property for the new center, which previously held a shuttered Ponderosa restaurant, from Health & Homes STL, another nonprofit that is investing millions in health and infrastructure improvements along West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson. The new teen center is the first element of an ongoing development initiative that could reach $80 million in investment, Health & Homes officials previously told the Business Journal.
“This is certainly a proud moment in the history of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis,” Flint Fowler, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis, said Thursday in a statement. “Teens deserve a safe place to grow and learn, exercise their creativity, explore their interests, and build meaningful relationships with peers and caring adults.”
He added, “We are also excited to be a part of the wave of development along West Florissant including the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis’s Empowerment Center and Plaza, the street scape project, Mercy Health Clinic and development of the Maline Greenway.”
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater St. Louis reported 2018 revenue of $9.3 million and operating expenses of $7.3 million, according to its annual report. The nonprofit serves youth ages 6-18 in St. Louis city and county with after-school, sports and summer programs at 10 locations, as well as operating dropout prevention programs, and the Mentor St. Louis and St. Louis Internship programs.

Can that area support Fields Foods?
That's pretty high end.

Ferguson is considered an under-served community as far as health care goes, and they're looking for new investment in the area. Nevertheless, nothing's ever easy:

$300k-400k a year to follow the consent decree pales in comparison to the combination of reduction in court fines and fees since 2014 and the low-productivity auto-oriented development patterns.

Glad they didn’t, instead of a gas station on the site, now sits a community center.
