Normandy is kind of interesting as MAP test scores go. For a high poverty district, their high school does better than many others in the area, at least based on looking at other high school data on citydata. 67% free and reduced lunch, but only 58% below basic. Most schools with high poverty seem to be more 1:1 or worse. Maybe it's a fluke. They seem to be doing something sort of rightish or at least less bad than other schools with high poverty.

The University City School District became the second one to tell transfer students from Normandy that they will not be allowed to return for the 2014-15 school year.
State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal:
Chappelle-Nadal said she voted to not allow former Normandy students to return to University City for the 2014-2015 school year because she feared those students’ test scores could negatively affect University City’s. “I want to make sure that that this district stays accredited,” Chappelle-Nadal said.
Watching this from the sidelines, but having no say or power to vote on this stuff, it seems like the 90 cities in the burbs are really looking out for their own interests, f$%& the other cities/schools. I'd love to hear from the locals what people think of this decision? Anyone from U. City or Normandy have an opinion?

Ladue will allow about half of the Normandy student transfers:
The news comes as Francis Howell and University City have said no to Normandy transfer students for the coming school year.
Ladue officials have not made a decision on students from Riverview Gardens, the other unaccredited district subject to a state law upheld by the state Supreme Court last summer.

I actually liked the Francis Howell school board's reasoning - essentially, that busing kids from Normandy to Francis Howell isn't really a solution. I probably would have been in favor of letting the students who were there last year stay so as to avoid another round of upheaval and turmoil in their lives, but otherwise I agree that it is not a real solution.

I agree, I feel sorry for the kids who are decent students that have to sit on that long bus ride. It's crazy. I can see the reason in Ferguson/Florrissant's rejection as well based on their laws. However, the over-arching read I am getting is that no one really has a regional, all hand's on deck attitude toward educating kids. It just a "not my problem" kind of thing.
The Ferguson-Florissant School Board announced this morning that it voted unanimously to uphold a district policy which prohibits non-resident students from enrolling in the district except under certain provisions.
"The Board believes in the value of strong community schools, and we want to see all school districts succeed,” said Robert Chabot, Ferguson-Florissant board president. "We are encouraged by the plans for the Normandy Schools Collaborative to improve outcomes for Normandy students, and we are dedicated to maintaining the strength and stability of Ferguson-Florissant to benefit the region as a whole."
Brentwood, Maplewood Richmond Heights, Parkway and Webster Groves had fewer transfer students from Normandy, but also have decided to allow them to remain. Kirkwood Superintendent Tom Williams has said he will recommend to the board that the district keep the few Normandy students who asked to return.

^ All systems should welcome back those who want to return. Let the families decide if the trip out to F-H is worth it.
