I just drove through Memphis on the way back from Spring break. The relatively new I-40 bridge in Memphis is named the Hernando-DeSoto Bridge, but everyone in Memphis calls it the "M" bridge due to the shape.

The M Bridge in Memphis, TN by TheForma, on Flickr

We could call ours the M-bridge -- it is even more like an M and it is over the Mississippi.
Other ideas -- the I-70 Bridge, the suspension bridge, if we paint the strands a particular color, it could be the ____ bridge.

I'm surprised we aren't selling the naming rights of the bridge to a corporation to help pay for the cost. What is wrong with the "Tums for the Tummy" bridge?

Or we leave it the no-name bridge for 30 year, and let someone currently alive strive to earn the honor of having the bridge named after them.

^Okay...that bridge is lit up...

I hope some kind of artistic statement is made with our new Mississippi R bridge...

My bet is that it will simply be called the "new bridge" by locals. We'll see what local TV calls it in traffic reports. They won't use any official name that's very long.

My vote is for the "Not The Signature Bridge We Hoped For But It's More Affordable And May Lead To The Removal Of I-70 Downtown Opening Up Lots Of Land For Redevelopment And Connecting The City To the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial And The River Too" Bridge.

Call it the NTSBWHFBIMAAMLTTROI-70DOULOLFRACTCTTJNEMATRT" Bridge for short.

We could immediately apply for sister city status with Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, famous for its train stop, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Nice update in the PD: http://www.stltoday.com/suburban-journa ... 18fc9.html
The bridge and related connections are expected to be completed by January 2014.
Illinois construction

Projects set for this year include:

• New bridges over I-55/70 at Exchange Avenue and I-64 at 15th Street.

• Extending Exchange Avenue from Packers Drive to First Street.

• Work on the Illinois approach and bridge structure near Illinois Route 3.
Missouri construction

On the Missouri side, the biggest impact to commuters will be the rebuilding of Cass Avenue, according to Project Director Greg Horn.
On the bridge itself, workers are now trying to make the last few concrete pours on the foundation to get it safely above the water level for spring flooding.

I read an article on the construction status of the bridge the other day. Extremely cool item to note:

Construction of the piers should be several hundred feet high by late fall.

Should be cool to see the most visible portion of the project making a large impact on the skyline as early as this fall! I am extremely excited for this bridge, as St. Louis' other bridges are all short. Should add a very nice element to the skyline.

^ Now if we could just get it lit. A private fund needs to be established for installation and maintenance.

Crap. I just realized that, no matter what the new bridge is formally named, it'll just be called the Brooklyn Bridge. After all, it goes from Downtown to Brooklyn, IL. Doesn't that just suck.

Unless it's really witty and memorable...

I'm still in favor of naming it the Johnny B. Goode Bridge.

Missouri State Senator John Lamping (R - Ladue) wants to name the bridge the "Cards-Cubs Bridge". The order would depend on which direction you're traveling. (via the Riverfront Times)

Why bring Chicago into this? They're a city 300 miles away. This is our bridge. Call it the Great River Bridge or something related to us and the river.

I vote for "This is a Bridge", which I stole from the book that just came out named "This is a Book" which I'm buying for my wife for Mom's day. (Funny stuff, palindromes, and a crossword puzzle where all the answers are made up of the letter A.)

^Demitri Martin!

He was at the Pageant earlier this year...Of course I wasn't...

A name with "river roots" makes a lot of sense too...

And as long as we're onto painfully obvious ideas, how about the Saint Louis Bridge...

I would disagree with you on that thought, every bridge across the Mississippi can or does claim "river roots"

I'm back to favoring an individual from the area that has national name recognition.

I would be down with names too...As others have said, it's gonna be the "new bridge" for a while anyways...I was just thinking that none of the bridges in the area have a "river root" name that I'm aware of...I can't speak for bridges up and down river...
