As much as I hate to see the city lose any population, I would be happy to see those bloggers move to JeffCo where they can pontificate all the live long day on how tough it is to be a white "Amurican" and moan about "enemy" immigrants who have the gall to work two jobs while their native born neighbors are cooking meth.

Maybe we can have an exchange program where we can trade a narrow minded bigot for an open minded person who appreciates cities for their diversity.

Okay, rant done.

^Well, how do we know these idiots aren't immigrants themselves? I'm sure there are more than a few Christian Serbs in St. Louis that might express such sentiments.

That is so stereotypical, I can't believe you would post such un-pc crap.

One of my friends is a JeffCo Fire Fighter, and he said last night that they have had 7 fires in the last 7 days, mostly from meth labs..

I guess some stereotypes are true.

I had hoped that bigotry was mostly confined to small towns (although not all small towns), but apparently not. I guess I was being naive.

I wish people would get off their high horses. Muslims are not dangerous, only a few radicals. Why can't we just accept other people?

Gosh.

The prayer tower is a cross between a Catholic bell-tower and the use of the Jewish shofar (prayer is sang over speakers). So, it's history not ethnocentrism.

Ok, the minaret was an adaptation of existing western forms. That isn't my point. What I am saying is that these Muslims aren't building their minaret in order to copy or rival the Catholic Churches in St. Louis. Moreover, they are not inspired by our Churches. They have their own traditions and places of worship which are equally inspirational. Ottoman and broader Islamic Architecture is beautiful. They look to these as reasons to build the minaret.

Naturally, as a critical mass assembles, they would build such a place. They didn't build this in order to compete. They didn't look at St. Francis de Sales and say "wow, we need a minaret." They built the minaret because they want the feel of their home country. They want the solidarity that their own familiar architecture brings. As the Mexicans on Cherokee Street don't open their own restaurants in order to copy the ethnic feel of the Hill, the same applies here.

Good explanation, but merely stating the obvious intentions of the Muslims.

I think the minaret is a going to be a great addition to the cityscape. We should be proud of our diversity here. I find it a welcome sight (and no, I am not Muslim.)

Does anyone know the date of the official dedication ceremony? I heard it was going to be some time this month.

Does anyone know of the status for the construction of South County - Lemay Ferry Minaret?

It has been quite some time since any discussion on this topic has occurred. The Islamic Community Center website and the local papers have not brought up any more information regarding the Lemay Ferry property.

Many pickup trucks are seen entering the property and people entering the dilapidated garage that exists there.

Quite recently the RFT posted a story called 'Deadbeat Ho!' that featured Business and Individuals that have failed to pay income tax. The Islamic Community Center, Inc. is listed as having to owe $43,044.09.

I have included a few photos of the new Minaret in South City and the Lemay Ferry property.

Update on South County Minaret

Revised Islamic center plan OK’d
By Phil Sutin
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Wednesday, Feb. 17 2010
ST. LOUIS COUNTY -- St. Louis County officials have granted the Islamic
Community Center permission to expand its plans for a community center in south
St. Louis County.

The county planning commission on Feb. 8 approved the change in plans. On
Tuesday, the County Council affirmed the action.

After some controversy, the county in November 2007 allowed the organization’s
plan for a community center of 25,000 square feet on 4.72 acres on the west
side of Lemay Ferry Road, 75 feet northeast of Buckley Road. The organization,
which serves the Bosnian community, is raising money for the project and has
not constructed the building.

The county agreed to expanding the building to 46,000 square feet and adding a
mosque of 4,000 square feet.

Muhamed Hasic, the organization’s imam, said the group wants to add a stage to
the gym, locker rooms, additional conference rooms, a museum about the civil
war in Bosnia in the early 1990s and storage space to the building’s original
plans.

“The mosque is long range,” Hasic said. “It may be 15-20 years away.”

The organization is raising money for the center, which would cost $5.8
million. The organization has about 600 families and serves an additional 2,000
families, he said. The group may construct the building in phases, starting
with the gymnasium, he said.

The organization would retain the center’s present building at 4660 Lansdowne
Avenue in St. Louis, Hasic said.

In April 2007, the County Council voted 4-3 against granting the organization
permission for its project; some residents complained about potential traffic
problem. The rejection led to a protest from some clergy and two state
senators. A lawsuit challenged the rejection.

In August of that year, the council unanimously reversed its vote. The lawsuit
ended with a settlement that included a judge’s order to grant permission for
the project.

I hope this doesn't lead to the phase-out of the Lansdowne center, or further migration of the Bosnian community to the County.
