Joe Whittington reports in the P-D last Thursday that the St. Louis Jazz Cafe is scheduled to open in March in the old Red Moon space downtown. This is great news! Hopefully the Red Moon decor is still there.

The jazz venue will occupy the space that once housed the Red Moon restaurant in the Terra Cotta Lofts, 1501 Locust Street.

Arnold and Aundra Charleston will be opening it in March. Tim Simms will be putting together the food offerings.

Interest level = 10!

Arnold Charleston said the new spot would have live entertainment three or four nights a week, and maybe a Sunday jazz brunch.

The rest of the week will consist of local talent and streaming smooth jazz from the Internet.

Interest level goes to 0.

"Once a week we'll get a headliner, and I've been talking with Erin Bode and Tim Cunningham," said Arnold Charleston.

Interest level goes to a guarded 5.

I'll give them a chance, I'll see who they book, and I'll certainly go listen to Erin Bode. But if they book smooth jazz crap, you can count me out. And I'll certainly never go there during the "rest of the week".

Cool. Now if St. Louis can just get a good gospel brunch like Stubbs BBQ in Austin Texas or some of the places down in New Orleans. Then I'd be happy.

Got a mailer the other day asking to sign off on approving the liquor license. I am assuming this one will go considering there was a bar in here previously?

I did not know that. I'll have to check it out. Hopefully "real" gospel and not Amy Grant crap.

I had brunch there this past Sunday. The chef was quite personable, the food was presented well and tasted great. Should be a great place for live jazz with friends or significant others.

anyone know a place that has live spanish guitar? that's what we need next, although it wouldn't be unreasonable for a restaurant to just book spanish guitar from time to time

a spanish guitar restaurant would be awesome though

OT. I saw a flamenco dancer with a live guitarist at that wine bar on Grand just South of Arsenal. That was some time ago, though. I have no idea if they still perform there.

I checked the website. The menu isn't available online yet. Erin Bode (yea!) will be the headliner for the grand opening tomorrow night. Apparently she will be doing two shows although no start times were listed.

I haven't weighed in on this before, but I'm pretty excited about the concept and I'm glad to see something like this going into this space.

That's great to hear. I'm looking forward to giving this place a try ASAP.

(Now, please tell me there was no Kenny G in the background during your brunch!) :)

St. Louis Jazz Café at 1500 St. Charles Street is closed.

Operations manager Tim Simms confirmed the closing Friday morning, and said he was shut down over sound issues. The venue is housed within the Terra Cotta Lofts, and neighbors lodged noise complaints.

Simms also said the spot was losing money because much of the clientele weren’t late-night dwellers.

I noticed a short blurb in today's P-D print edition...according to P-D music columnist Kevin Johnson...St. Louis Jazz Cafe is looking for a new location.

/fingers crossed, hopefully they'll find another spot downtown
