Does anyone have any renderings for the new target store? There are several renderings up on the wall inside, maybe I will have to take a picture of them. Couldn't even find the much better article in the PD.

Hampton Village Target to close; new store will open in October

Amanda C. Tinnin

Of the Suburban Journals

It's taken nearly six years, but a new Southampton Target is on the way.

Alderman Donna Baringer, Ward 16, is making the rounds with drawings of what the neighborhood's new Target will look like.

When the current Target locks its doors Jan. 8, it will not reopen. Instead, a larger store will open 10 months on the site of the existing store.

Baringer said the corporation is working on getting all permits and plans approved before then so construction can begin as soon as possible.

The new store will be more than 30,000 square feet larger and be moved closer to Hampton Avenue. Barringer added that there will only be a few parking spaces in front of the store. Those spaces are likely to be marked for handicapped parking. More parking will be available in the new store's garage.

The St. Louis Police Department will have a substation located in the garage and there will be escalators that will accommodate both shoppers and their carts.

The Target sign that now towers over motorists will come down and shopped will find only one main entrance instead of the three that now exist.

Employees at the store have been notified of closing dates. Barringer said Target is working on placing them in other stores while the new location is built. Those employees will also be first in line for jobs.

Target has leased the St. Louis Hills location for 30 years from a group of New York real estate investors who own the property. In 2002, Target approached the owners about building a new store and asked for a lease through 2040.

I live right by this Target and will hate to see it close, but am really happy they're making a commitment to South City and making this a signature store. The current store is way too small for the amount of business it does.

The renderings I saw in the store were OK, I don't know how exciting you can make a Target look

^I agree, living 3 blocks away will make it tough when they close, but I am definately looking forward to the new store. I think the problem with the renderings in the store and the one in the journal is that they are small and zoomed in a little to close. They don't have one showing what it would look like say from Hampton Village looking towards it. But that's ok. It still looks good for a Target.

The Designs of the Dobb's and Walgreens across the street are turning out rather nice too, especially for those type of buildings.

I was thinking that this morning as I passed the Walgreens. Even though I hate seeing a Walgreens on every corner, it's nice to see lots of brick being used at the Hampton Village site. I wish it was closer to the street and parking was in back though

Construction on the new target store at Hampton Village has started. For those that may not know, the store will be completely rebuilt and expanded by about 30,000 sq. ft., and have an underground parking garage. It is scheduled to reopen in October.

New Target Store Will Open In Hampton Village

New store will replace existing Hampton Village Target store

MINNEAPOLIS (November 5, 2004) ? Target today announced plans to open a new Target store in Hampton Village. The new store, scheduled to open in October 2005, will be built at the current Target store location at 4255 Hampton Avenue. To allow for completion of the new Target store, the existing Target store will close at the end of the business day on Saturday, January 8, 2005.

The new, larger Target store will provide guests with wider aisles and updated design features for an enjoyable and convenient shopping experience. The new store will also offer guest services such as a pharmacy and one-hour photo center.

The existing Hampton Village store, first opened in July 1975, will continue to serves its guests until the closing date. Target hopes to re-employ approximately 138 employees of the existing store at the new Target. Target regrets the temporary closing of this store and any inconvenience it may cause St. Louis residents.

25 Brentwood Promenade Ct.

4250 Rusty Road, St. Louis

1042 S. Kirkwood Road

Construction pics from toady, 2-5. I have pics of the demolition, but I have to capture them from film, because I was in Washington, DC, during the demo.

I have pics of the original building for reference, but because my desktop is so crammed with pic files, I can not locate them. Heres a shot for reference. I really need more time to rename and resize pics. OK, back to topic

Nice update.

Wonder if the Target will have similar architecture as Hampton Village and the new Walgreen's? An underground garage? Cool. So does that mean the store will be built near the sidewalks or is the garage in addition to a smaller parking lot? Who designed it?

I would love to see some site plans.

Also, the architecture of Hampton Village is timeless. I went to school at Bishop DuBourg, which is right around the corner, for one year. I've always admired the design of the village. After all of these years, they keep it up pretty good too.

Donna Barringer, 16th Ward alderman, gave us a lowdown on this project last weet at a ward meeting. The building will abut the sidewalks. The "underground" garage will be partly on street level. If you travel west on Chippewa from Hampton, it goes down hill slightly, so part of the garage will be exposed. It's not so much underground, as under the building. She didn't really understand my question, or what I was getting at, and so I didn't really understand her response. The police substation will remain somewhere on site. Again, she wasn't exactly clear. I'm not sure if it will be in the garage, or on a small parcel of land. They have two 10-hour shift crews working all week, and are supposed to be finished by October, which exhausts me just mentioning it.

From what the rendering showed... I don't think so.

One beef I have with this project is the muddy mess the trucks are making on the streets while they are hauling away the dirt for the garage. The dirt is being stored on several vacant lots near Alabama and the river Des Peres. According to my Alderman (the outstanding Matt Villa) the dirt will eventially be used to raise the new Loughborough Commons project above the flood plain. However until the developer Desco closes on the Commons property the dirt must be temporarily stored somewhere. One good outcome of this will be that after the dirt is removed Desco has promised to landscape the vacant lots into more parkland for the neighborhood.

Ya, I took pics of the dirt piles yesterday, and got my shoes quite muddy. That's what I figured the dirt was for.

Cool! It is unusual to see a Target with underground parking. Love the parking sign.

Steve Patterson, the author of the Urban Review St. Louis (urbanreviewstl.com) website, has a good review on this particular Target and he compares/contrasts it with the NorthGate Target in Seattle. The Seattle Target store is on the top two levels of a four story structure. Here is the link to his review if you have not already seen it:

I just drove by there last night and was surprised at the progress. I thought it wasn't opening until November, but much to my surprise there was an 'Opening October 9' sign hanging on the building.

This is far and above nicer than the previous Target.

Now if a nice developer would open a similar store on the NorthSide...

Does anyone know if target implemented any green building techniques here? I hope they have. They have a pretty good recent track record of building green, not always going as far as LEED certified, but good steps like a reflective roof, rainwater collection, low VOC paint, etc.

nice to see them build it like this with the garage, instead of having a vast parking lot. Also is this Target two floors with escalators inside?

Yea, its a good looking building. Not the ultimate answer we're all hoping for, but definately a step in the right direction.

Now, if only we could bulldoze that mistake farther East on Chippewa at Kingshighway and start over...

Thanks for the pics UrbanStlouis! The Target looks good - it's great they put a parking garage in and didn't make a vast parking lot.

It does seem to be 2 stories as I look at it - very similar to a Target I frequent in Chi-town. Does the Target face Hampton still, or did they turn it 45 degrees to face Chippewa?

The new store opens October 4, by invitation only, although the Alderwoman has told me no one will be refused. There will be food and entertainment for the neighborhood residents. I can't wait, because there are some things I really need, and I can't stand to do all my shopping at Walgreen's.

How was the opening? I was at Schnuck's the other night and heard the band that they had playing at the grand opening festivities. Alas, I was not invited.

I wasn't invited either, but I still went. There was only 500 invitations, and they were sent out by the alderwoman to people she considered to be making a difference in the community. The mayor and about 5 aldermen were there. Couple of speeches, then a ribbon cutting, then everyone crammed in the front doors. There was food and cakes for everyone. The store is really nice, lot's more of everything, and the escalators are kind of a novelty. It is open for business now if anyone is needing something there.
