I went to pick up tickets last week during the day at the Fox. Couldn't see anything in the new City Diner but you could tell work was going on. Lots of voices, machinery and banging away going on inside.
That's great to hear. I know late after a show at the Fox I have gone down to City Diner on South Grand before, which is far out of the way. It will be great to have this right in the hood.
The drywall's going in...
I heard from a waitress at the South City Diner a couple weeks ago that they're still on to open in March, and that there's talk of also including a 3am bar in the GC location.
A nifty neon City Diner sign is now lighting up the main window on Grand. Shouldn't be long now...
Word is they're opening June 8.

Is this place open? If so, what's it like? Can't wait to check it out.Framer wrote:Word is they're opening June 8.
Not sure. The paper's off the windows, looks ready to go, but I didn't see any diners inside.
Now open
They've got sidewalk seating too, which should improve the activity level on Grand.

Went there for lunch today, after a coworker told me it was open for breakfast this morning.
First impressions:
Seems like it'll be a good addition to the neighborhood.
*I didn't see any hours posted anywhere. Assume they're still deciding?
First impressions:
- Small, much smaller than the South Grand location. It will be absolutely packed before (and after?*) Fox/Grandel/SLSO events.
- A bit noisy.
- They were surprisingly crowded for lunch, given that there was no announcement of the opening (that I saw, anyway, other than their own Web site) -- there were multiple parties waiting for tables several times while I was eating.
- There are five or six two-top tables pushed right up to the windows along the Grand side of the restaurant -- I didn't see if there's any seating along Washington.

I'll try to get some pictures posted. Crowded seems like a good thing. Maybe the patrons heard it hear first.
Good crowd tonight. Big pre-show crowd buzzing up and down Grand, too. Wish it looked like that every night.
Frankly, the food was a bit disappointing, though.

Finally gave this place a try tonight. It's quite nice, with less of a diner feel than the TGS location; it's more upscale or modern in its decor. Great place to people watch and a booth right by the windows on Grand provide a great view of the baptist church and Strauss park. Lots of pedestrian activity and the food is consistent as ever. I agree with the other posters that is much smaller than the other location.
I LOVED THE NEW CITY DINER.
Well done! My favorite part is the red neon glow coming through the marble countertop.

noisy atmosphere
over priced reuben consisted of 2 slices of bread with a skimpy amount of corned beef and a slice of cheese
i will pass on trying the place out a second time

There is a new sign going up on the corner of the building. Very classy. This is becoming one of the coolest intersections in the city. Grand looks great between Delmar and Lindell.
Good interview with Jeanne Spoto, co-owner of the City Diner.
