The conversion of the building at 2201 Washington Avenue into 83 lofts tentatively known as the WestTown Lofts will now be called Motor Lofts. A sales center will open in the Altman Building at 2201 Washington Avenue on April 28th to begin accepting contracts with building occupancy planned for December 2006.

Their website at http://www.thewesttownlofts.com looks to still be in use, but a new website will be available at http://www.motorlofts.com

I think what you are seeing is the new gymnasium at the Ethel Lyle Hedgman Academy...

Motor Lofts is just east of that site

The motorlofts.com website is online showing a lot of basic information including floorplans.

The site says that every loft gets a free scooter. That's pretty cool.

A free scooter is a pretty awesome perk. 75 units = 75 new scooters on the streets of downtown!

Those images are rather dated. At the time, there was a plan to convert the "Good Willy" Building (to the northeast of the Motor Parts Warehouse) into a combination of potential tenants/ parking. In the rendering we did, you are seeing the northern facade of the Motor Lofts building, the proposed pool area to the north, and the eastern facade of the Good Willy building.

There have been some design changes/ decisions since these renderings were issued. For a comprehensive update on new design plans, I would attend the loft tour, June 10-11th.

Thanks,

Adam

thanks for the update adam. i'm really excited to get some more people moving into our area - although it would seem to be a few years before this one happens, but adler, majestic, westgate(hopefully), and packard will be nearing completion sometime in the not too distant future. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone will be bold enough to open a restaurant below adler once people start moving in. on a different note, i'm afraid to ask where the "good willy" name orginated...

There was a car company called Willy's, which I believe was a precursor to Jeep - maybe that has something to do with the name.

Rumor has it that Motor Lofts Sales Center is scheduled to open to the public on June 2nd. Starting May 19th, however, they're granting sneak peek VIP access. If you want first crack at the "best" units, VIP access is your friend.

Has anyone been in the new sales center for Motor Lofts? It's a joint sales center for all McGowan Walsh projects. It's very cool. I was in there this week - it just opened on Friday of last week at a Realtor-Only event. You gotta stop in. The kitchens & baths for their two model units weren't finished yet b/c the fixtures were being imported from overseas. Supposedly very high end, cutting edge finishes. Motor Lofts has these ultra cool corrugated metal ceilings in their units and I think in the hallways.

I'm going down there again and will upload photos from my next visit. I'm considering a purchase in there...and I'd get a new scooter to boot!

What is the true scoop on ther scooter? Is it a $35 Razor or a $3500 Vespa or something in between? Do you get it at closing? Do you get to choose color etc., etc.?

I believe it's going to be a Popcycle.

I've also heard it will be a Popcycle G49. Not as nice as the Vespa LX 50 HyS who's 2007 release I'm eagerly anticipating, but it's a capable little scooter, not a toy sales gimmick.

Packard Lofts will also be giving these to all buyers. Steve Patterson indicated on his blog that all McGowan|Walsh projects will be giving out scooters. Even if only 20% of these new residents take to using them, that could mean hundreds of scooter users Downtown. I would not be surprised if in 10 years we look back and consider that one of the most culture-shifting events St. Louis has experienced.

MW is definitely giving away a Popcycle scooter with every purchase in Packard & Motor. The brand is Popcycle. Regardless of what Steve Patterson wrote on his blog, I'm not certain as to whether or not a Popcycle is being given away with every MW loft or just the Packard & Motor lofts. I often run across the developers and will ask the question to get clarification, straight from the horses mouth.

Good question. I just called to confirm and for "right now" it is only the Packard & Motor Lofts --- not Ballpark or G.E.W. Still, that will mean quite a few scooters running around downtown.

A nice compromise. If downtown can't get the streetcar service it needs to connect close neighborhoods to what should be a vibrant core of commercial activity, then let the private market handle it. Scooter's can perhaps meet that need better than a fixed rail system, offering speed and flexablity. Either way, its a good deal for residents and for the city.

That's a shame, as scooters could really help connect the Ballpark residents to the northern loft district.

As an aside, I hope either Motor or Packard ends up with a Popcycle serice shop as a tenant!

As for color selections of McGowan Walsh scooters...I understand there will be several (maybe 5???) cool color selections available. The colors were selected using color trends from magazines like DWELL. I heard that the scooters will be parked and on display in front of the sales center soon!

PostJun 14, 2006#48

Did anyone else see the McGowan Walsh sales center on the loft tour and notice the difference in how it feels up there? It's a totally different experience once you pass 17th & Washington. I felt a little claustrophobic on the tour when on Wash Ave between 12th & 14th. I notice the pricing on Motor Lofts as low as $140k for a small one bed unit...

PostAug 07, 2006#49

MW hosted "Contract Cocktails" in the last week or so at their sales center for buyer's with contracts at Packard and/or Motor. They toured the buildings. I'll post photos if I can get in the buildings anytime soon. Demolition on Motor Lofts started last week. Occupancy mid-summer 07. Sales appear to be swift at Motor Lofts and even more brisk at Packard where occupancy is November 06.

Deb Peterson writes today that the DT Childens Center will be moving from 13th adn Wash to the ground floor here. Sounds like they'll be able to to configure the space to their liking. Any ideas of what will replace it at 13th? as apparently McGowan/Walsh is trading spaces.
