A new Wal-Mart Super Center is currently under construction in Washington's hot commercial strip along Highway 100. Plans were also recently announced for a Target Store and a Kohl's Store.

Washington has experienced steady growth over the past few decades:

Pop. 1980 9,251

Pop. 1990 11,423

Pop. 2000 13,243

Pop. 2008 14,675 (est)

The city claims to serve a "shopping population" of more than 120,000 people in Franklin and Warren counties.

To accomodate the area's increased traffic, MODOT is planning to widen Highway 100 from Interstate 44 to Highway 47.

^And the City of Washington is taxing itself more to pay for the widening sooner.

The new Walmart Supercenter, Target, and Kohl's are already open, by the way. A new JC Penney expanded into the old Walmart Supercenter site, too. I was through that area just a couple weeks ago.

A bit slow to respond, but better late than never...

Besides the businesses already mentioned (Target, Kohl's, etc.), a number of other new businesses have opened in Washington, including rue21, Shoe Carnival, SuperCuts, Jimmy Johns, Qdoba, Steak n Shake, Bob Evans, Clarkson Eyecare, and two Starbucks (one is inside Target). Existing stores that relocated to new locations include GNC and Maurices.

A few more businesses are scheduled to open this year, in the Phoenix Center II development (where Target, Kohls, and the businesses mentioned above are located). The site plan for that development is online here: http://washmo.com/content/view/154/33/

Besides the businesses going into the new development, Washington is also getting a St. Louis Bread Company (near Route 100/Highway 47) and a Hibbett Sports (next to the new Walmart).

The Highway 100 widening project that was mentioned is now underway (started just a few weeks back). Info on it (including video) is here: http://washmo.com/content/view/157/1/

Take care,

Jason

The new 4 lane Highway 100 between Washington and I-44 is open and looks great. With I-44 being expanded to 6 lanes between Pacific and Washington (and Union soon), the Washington/Labadie/Union region will continue to grow. I imagine that Franklin County's population will rise quite a bit when people see how convenient the new Highway 100 will be and all of the great development and city improvements Washington continues to make.

Was in Washington Mo last week for the first time in a couple of years - Wow-

-Actual riverfornt developmet
-Construction looks high quality
-Fairly high density for a smaller town
-Rehab and new construction
-Lots of local shops and restuanrants with decent foot traffic

We are fortunate to have some high quality small towns within an hour or so of the city - Not all places in the country can boast that

I can see the "German Heritage / Missouri River" corridor becoming a real midwestern destination - Augusta, Washington, New Haven and Hermann all look good

Lets see if there is any development spill over into Defiance, Dutzow, Marthasville and Berger

I often suggest Washington for those looking for smaller cities within an easy drive to St. Louis. Thanks for sharing.

I try to make at least one trip to Washington each year; great little town.

Fantastic little city…I’m out there for business on occasion. But I honestly noticed how awesome and quaint (if you will) it was when I was passing by on Amtrak. So much of this new development is in Washington’s core near the train tracks.

They’re really doing it right.

I have a friend who volunteers at Iron Spike, which is a lovely little railroad/model railroad museum. It's probably been a year or so since I was last out there, but yes, I can agree with more or less all that folks have said. The development is very nice. The new-build fits in well with what's there. (I wish more of our city five over ones looked as nice.) Pleasant little town. And who can argue with a nice model railroad?

Likewise, a recent trip to Washington left me very impressed with their downtown area.

If the winery business in Augusta ends up taking off as its owner expects it to, Washington stands to gain from that in a major, major way.

When we go to the wineries we usually go out via 94 and then do Montelle then go to Balducci or Blumenhof.

When we come back we try to stop in Washington for dinner then come back via Hwy 100 and 44.

Yes, they’ve got a few nice places out there. Worth checking out.

Excited to see how the winery developments in Augusta turn out!  Having our own little regionally recognized wine country would be a fantastic addition.

The ferry is also such a novel and fun idea for day trips, hope that really takes off.

If coming from/going to Hermann I also suggest stopping in Hew Haven and checking out the Pickney Bend distillery.

Funky little “downtown” stretch they have there.

Old school movie theater.

^Yeah, I've never been inside, but I've shot many pics of the outside of that theater. Really, really cool.

^That's a cute little thing. Wish we still had some of our neighborhood houses in the city. (I'm glad we have the cineplexes inside of city limits that we do, but I miss places like the Granada and the Avalon.)

New Haven also has a great new microbrewery--Paddle Stop--we took a drive up there a couple weeks ago.

We had a flight there, then wandered the shops and riverfront and hit up Pinckney Bend for a tasting afterward. It was a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

I concur, Montelle and Blumenhoff are our regular stops when we head out there.  I also like Augusta Winery.  I find their reds are some of the "dryer" Missouri wines IMO.   I recall their Chambourcin and Allevium(?) to be quite decent.  Haven't tried the Cab Franc, though seems it would play as well.

I'll vouch for Montelle, it's my go-to when in Augusta and they have a number of good dry and semi-dry options.

Also I'm not generally a brandy drinker but their grappa is *chef's kiss* (and is also available at Total Wine if you don't want to drive all the way out there).

Looks like the owner of the former newspaper building in Washington is converting it into a mini "Foundry" like development with a nice 2 story deck
