From the Clayton CityViews newsletter: August 2008

"Claverach Park is close to obtaining a neighborhood designation as a National Historic District. Work has also begun to have the 7500 blocks (multi-family portion) of the Moorlands so designated, as well.

And speaking of history, have you been on a walking architectural tour of Ward II with Elsey Hamilton, preservationist for St. Louis County? Elsey led a fascinating tour of Claverach Park and the Moorlands in early June. There are architectural features of homes you may not have noticed before. Watch the Parks and Recreation brochure for a tour of your favorite neighborhood."

This is exciting news for residents of the Moorlands (I think). Can someone out there help me to understand what exactly the pros and cons of this nomination would be? And if you haven't driven through our neighborhood before, you should check us out. The architecture of our housing stock is some of the best in the region!

Here is a LINK to a list of National Historic Districts in St. Louis City. Maybe some of the residents from these neighborhoods can share their experience, if any.

I agree. The Moorlands definitely deserves to be listed. It's a beautiful neighborhood, with outstanding architecture. Some new infill has been built lately, and I'm sure more could be on the way, so it's important to establish some design standards now, before it's too late.

I found out yesterday that the nomination is being bankrolled by Cornerstone Properties.

Good for Clayton and good for the region to value historic housing.

However, Clayton does have its fair share of building that could be replaced for quality density along or adjacent to major transportation corridors. Clayton Road and Brentwood in particular.

This sounds like good news to me. The neighborhood is a treasure and deserves to be treated as such.

I to agree that the Moorlands is truly a gem. I'm curious. I never hear anyone giving some Love to Davis Place in Clayton. What do you folks think about Davis Place? How does it compare to the Moorlands?

I used to live on Claytonia Terrace. Will it and other streets like Hoover, Ethel, etc. be part of this designation or is it just Moorland?

I received a 3 part letter from the MO dept of Natural Resources regarding the nomination.

dated 4.10.09

"We are pleased to inform you that the above referenced property which you own will be considered by the Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation for the nomination to the National Register of Historic Places as part of the district nomination....

Listing of the Moorlands Addition Apartment District, provides recognition of the communities historical importance and assures protective review of Federal projects that might adversely affect the character of historic property....

You are invited to attend the Missouri Advisory Council meeting where the nomination will be considered.
