I think the tournament should stay in St. Louis due to the fact that there is a brand new restaurant in town that is owned by 3 SIU alums! (That would be Simply Fondue, of course!)

again, what's this rotation crap. I ask one question, does the college world series rotate? No, Omaha has it and will keep it!

KC already has hosted the Big 12 tournament, but that has been rotating with KC, OKC, and Dallas.

Having the Headquarters here means a lot to keeping the MVC tourney in town. We do need to find them some space to build a sweet, state of the art, facility for their HQ.

^Yeah, what's up with that anyway? I thought they had decided on a site near Savvis/Union Station?

I asked a guy I know who works for the MVC, and he was pretty tight-lipped about it.

^ I figure that means the MVC is willing to listen to offers of a new HQ as part of the tournament location package. I would bet KC is offering up space.

To be fair, I can see how some MVC schools would be pushing for a KC and STL rotation for holding the tournament. Hopefully St. Louis will be able to keep it.

MVC tournament likely to stay in St. Louis through 2011

By Vahe Gregorian

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

11/12/2007

After months of entertaining bids from other cities, the Missouri Valley Conference will announce Tuesday that its men’s basketball tournament will remain in St. Louis through at least 2011.

A source said the decision was made Monday by MVC presidents, acting on recommendations of conference athletics administrators, and then reviewed by conference institutions’ faculty athletics representatives.

"I can’t confirm that’s what our decision is going to be," said MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin, with a chuckle. "But I feel really good about the direction the tournament is going in."

The St. Louis-based MVC has conducted the tournament here since 1991, when fewer than 8,000 attended the championship game at Kiel Auditorium.

With continuity and the ascension of the conference in recent years, the tournament’s popularity has increased exponentially since. Attendance at last season’s final was 22,612, the best-attended conference tournament title game in the nation.

Yet in seeking to take the tournament to "the highest level possible," Elgin said over the summer, the St. Louis-based MVC for the first time since 1991 considered bids from other cities. Des Moines, Kansas City and Omaha, Neb., formally applied. Chicago initially showed interested but ultimately did not bid.

Among factors believed at play in the return to Scottrade Center: the sheer momentum and foundation in place; longtime sponsorship support; size of the arena (others have several thousand fewer seats); travel costs (St. Louis is within a three-hour drive of six conference schools); and a thriving working relationship with the likes of Fred Corsi and Dennis Petrullo of Scottrade.

Terrific news! Now build a damn headquarters. Their current spot is TOO small. I hear the city is being a b**** with the land they want near Scottrade. Anyone know exactly where that is exactly?

The land in question is currently a city-owned parking lot, just south of the MetroLink tracks across from the Scottrade.

Why don't they just build at Ballpark Village? With the Cardinals museum, the Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum there, the MVC could feed off the momentum. Or why not LaClede's Landing? Surely they could infill a piece of property there.

^ Good call. I think with the Chouteau's Pond project and a possible greenway, the land just south of the Metrolink tracks should be kept open until some kind of master plan that incorporations the pond/greenway/new buildings is finalized.

I guess their thinking is that proximity to the Scottrade is essential. Right now, they're pretty close to it, in a small office building on Chouteau, across from Ameren.

BPV would be nice and close, but the impression that I get is that they want something that's visible from the Scottrade. Union Station would be a logical choice as well, but there's not much space available in the buildings there.

Build a HQs and a museum. As long as it makes an impression across from Scottrade, I am all for it, but I am tired of dinky little buildings dotting the downtown landscape.

^

Remember when there was discussion a few years back about building an office building at the northeast corner of 14th and Clark? Why not combine that idea with the MVC HQ and kill two birds with one stone.

Patience.

I would bet a lot of money that it happens in the next couple of years.

Majerus seems to be lobbying for it - he's expressed his displeasure with the A-10 on several occasions. However, if the bloated Big East splits up the smaller, private, non-football schools from the larger, public, football schools, we might be well positioned to join up with the other Catholic schools to form an all-Catholic conference. That would be ideal.

^ I like the sound of that...although the MVC would still be a great fit as well. I agree with The Rick about the A-10.

Glad to see the MVC tourney sticking around...now...let's secure the headquarters!

You know, while I can understand why it makes more sense for SLU to be in the MVC, I do wonder whether the presence of SLU in the MVC would make conference leaders seek out another location for the tournament or at least rotate the tounry locaiton to avoid giving SLU too much of a home court advantage each year.

I've wondered that too. However, this is the last year that Scottrade will be our home court, so maybe that would help. If the MVC didn't want to give any school a home city advantage, then KC would be the only realistic option since Creighton is in Omaha (and plays at the Qwest Center).

Maybe, but hasn't the Big 10 more or less settled on Indy?

By the time they came back into the MVC they will have been playing at their on campus stadium for a couple years at least, so I doubt thats an issue. Every one will be gone that considered kiel their homecourt.

Starting this season, the men's tourney will be in Indy for the next five years, the women's will be there for at least six.
